He took a deep breath. “Nora.”

My appetite was gone now.

“Last night was so wonderful…like I needed that so badly.”

“But?” His eyes seemed widen.

“Let’s leave this at what it was…two co-workers hooking up.”

Mason frowned and his mood was darkening. This was the assassin for hire that I knew and avoided. The one that had pulled a gun out of the water in Alaska and trained it on me.

“If you’re finished,” he stood up, and I noted that he hadn’t eaten any more. “I’ll take you…”

“To The Siren…it’s my sister’s shop and not too far from here.”

He nodded and I took one last longing glance at my food. The jingle of his keys hit my ears and I knew that it was time to get out of here. Everything we did from that point on was in silence. From getting onto the elevator to going down to the sky blue Tahoe. We got in and music started blasting the minute the SUV turned on. Instead of turning the music down, he punched in the directions for The Siren and sped out of the parking deck. Metal was thumping through my brain as if an ice pick was stabbing at me.

“Can you turn this down!” I hollered and he continued to ignore me.

Finally I reached over and did it myself, lowering the volume to something that I could stand.

“Don’t be a jerk, Mason.”

The SUV took a sharp jerk as he turned and we came to a red light. “Don’t insult me, Nora.”

“I’m sorry,” I mumbled.

“What?”

“I’m sorry I hurt your feelings. Mason can we be friends at least? I see you with Mr. DeLuca often enough and I don’t want it to be awkward.”

He stared straight ahead avoiding my question. Sitting back in the leather seat, I didn’t say another word until he pulled in front of The Siren. I was just about to get out when he stopped me.

“Yeah Nora,” he mumbled.

“Hmm?” My body was half way out of the door, but his words stopped me.

“We can be friends,” he offered a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

Mason looked wounded, as if I’d cut out the heart of his favorite animal. I started to feel fucking terrible. He waited until I was inside of the salon before driving away and my sister was standing there looking like a Victoria Secret angel. Her hair was braided up and she was wearing all white.

She patted her chair but my emotions started to get the better of me. My sister pulled me into a big hug.

“Oh no, what’s wrong? Do I need to kill that gorgeous motherfucker?”

Wiping at my face. “No. It’s me. I’m a walking disaster.”

“You are the furthest thing from a disaster,” Rain replied as she released me and had me sit down in her chair. She whirled my body around and I came face to face with my reflection.

I didn’t like the person staring back at me.

She was a coward who could never just simply go for what she wanted. Playing it safe was the best option. Slowly, I closed my eyes as Rain began to work on my hair. Her fingers began to sing a song on my scalp, lulling away some of the sadness I’d felt.

I didn’t belong in Mason’s world.

He belonged to the shadows and a girl like me could never make it there. Friendship was all either of us could really commit to and it needed to be enough.
