Matteo frowned and I saw Mason wince. Carmine was expressionless, with his arms folded over his chest.

Taking Rain by the arm, I pulled her into Mason’s bedroom. I shot him a look that told him I’d handle it.

“Girl…what kind of shit are you into with these people,” Rain frowned, her arms crossed and her foot tapping.

She looked like my mother and I wasn’t a fan.

Taking a breath, I started talking. “Mason saved me tonight. His father set all of this in motion and I’m still not exactly clear on why.”

She rolled her eyes. “Sis…don’t go protecting him.”

“I…”

“You what?” Rain snapped.

“I love Mason,” I stood up to my full height, even though I was still shorter than her.

“Love?” She sputtered. “Nora, baby, I don’t think this is it.”

My eyes started to sting. Rain’s face softened and finally she pulled me into another hug. I let her, enjoying her scent. The scent of lemons surrounded me and I let it pull at my senses. She had always made me feel safe.

“You know I don’t believe in love,” she whispered to me. “But I do see the way that man looks at you.”

Leaning back I peered at her, still in her arms. “How’s he lookin’ at me?”

She laughed a little. “Bitch, like he’s the big bad wolf and you’re his next meal.”

“Really?”

“Really, really,” she let go of me and took a breath. “And he did beat the shit out of what’s his face for me.”

“And his buddies.”

Rain nodded. “And his buddies.”

Walking my sister back out into the living room, I patted her back. Mason and his brothers were standing around. Their voices were hushed and I saw the thumb drive sitting on the counter. Rain picked up her purse.

“I took a ride share over,” she said to me.

Before she could finish her sentence, Matteo was offering to drive her home.

Carmine, silent but watching quirked an eyebrow because it was his vehicle.

“Call me tomorrow,” Rain kissed my cheek before walking out.

“Will do,” I smiled. “Love you.”

She blew me a kiss before sashaying out, and Matteo and Carmine followed. I had a feeling both men were checking my sister’s ass out. Tomorrow, I was definitely calling her and making sure she was steering clear of both of them.

“We’re alone at last,” I smiled looking around and fiddling with the hem of the yellow pajama top.

“Good,” Mason turned to me, his voice sounding only slightly different.

“Mason?”

“Yes, Darlin…” He was studying my features.

“We need to talk about all of it. Starting with your mom…Alaska?”
