She’s shaking, and tears still stream down her face, but she manages a smile for me. “Yeah. I’ll be okay. Joaquin, but I was so scared.”

“I can imagine,” I murmur in her ear, pulling her close to me. “You’re safe now.”

She pulls away and gives me an incredulous look. “Safe? I just killed a cartel dude. They’re going to come after me.” She starts trembling uncontrollably. “I’m going to die, Joaquin.”

“You’re not,” I say, but her body trembles so hard, and I see shock beginning to set in, so I know she’s not listening.

”It’s been fun.” Her words are muffled against my chest, but I know she’s trying to say goodbye.

“Dammit, Willow. Stop talking like that. I won’t listen to this.”

She pulls back with a sad smile on her beautiful face. Even in tears, she’s stunning. “Well, you have to listen now because this might be the last chance I get to say any of this to you.”

An impatient sigh escapes as she waits for me to argue, but even though I’m not going to let anything happen to her, I’m curious to hear what she has to say.

Willow continues, “Good. I want to thank you. For staying by my side while I healed, for helping bring me back to life, and not just literally. The time I’ve spent with you has been truly amazing. Thank you for sharing your mama’schili rellenoswith me, and thank you so fucking much, for the incredible sex. And finally, thank you for letting me fulfill my dream of being some hot biker’s sexy little biker babe.”

I laugh and pull her close. “You’re not dying, Willow. I won’t let you, and neither will the Reckless Souls.”

She shakes her head and swipes away some of her tears with a smile. “Don’t you understand, Joaquin? I don’t want to bring more shit to your door. If I hadn’t gone to Club Dynasty looking for Sandee, they might not even know who you guys are. This is my fault.”

I look around the clubhouse and see Wild Man holding Maven close and Shades doing the same for Letty. My brothers, soothing their women and keeping them safe.Same as me.

“Willow,” I whisper. “This isn’t your fault, and even if it was, we’ll protect you. I promise you that.”

She smiles up at me, blue eyes glittering like gems as she cups my face, a look of love so pure my heart literally fucking skips a beat. “Thank you, but I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Too bad. That’s not how it works when you’re a biker babe, Willow. You do as I say when it comes to your safety. Period.” I kiss her forehead and wrap her in another hug to stop her from shaking. “Besides, I haven’t taught you how to ride yet. Remember?”

The clubhouse door opens, and Stone steps inside, looking around the room until his gaze lands on Ace.

“Agent Stiles is outside and wants to talk to the girls from the bakery.”

“Let her in,” Ace instructs and waves at the other bar girls to disappear.

Agent Stiles walks in and looks around, but she’s not interested in the pool tables and dart boards. She’s taking stock of the MC as a whole, trying to figure out what she doesn’t know about us. Finally, she says, “Willow Martinez.”

Willow pulls away from me and turns to face the federal agent. “Th…that’s me. Am I going to jail?” I pull her against my chest for comfort, for her, and for me.

“No,” the woman sighs and motions for Willow to sit. “You’re not going to jail. Based on what we’ve investigated so far, it’s a clear-cut case of self-defense.”

Ace steps up beside me with a scowl on his face. “So, what’s the problem?”

“The problem is that the man you killed, Alejandro Moreno, is married to Arturo Rojas’ only daughter, Valentina. A man like Rojas takes that very seriously.” She keeps her gaze on Willow even though she’s talking to Ace.

Willow nods and buries her face in her hands. “I’m totally dead, right?”

Agent Stiles, to her credit, at least looks unhappy to confirm Willow’s suspicions. “The Organized Crime division has confirmed that there’s a green light on you, Willow.”

Willow crumbles against the table, sobbing so hard the table starts to wobble. For a few long seconds, the clubhouse is silent except for the sound of Willow crying with her whole fucking soul, and it’s tearing me apart.

I lift her in my arms and take her seat, holding her as close as I can and whispering that she will be all right. “I’m not going to let shit happen to you, Willow, I promise.”

“You’re safe,” Ace assures her in that deep, firm tone that stops even Willow from arguing. Then he turns to Stiles. “Do you know how many cartel members are on this side of the border right now?”

“Not yet, but I do know that Alejandro worked with a small team, probably how they got a name on your girl so quickly.”

I look back at Ace, who nods at Wild Man to start digging into those assholes. “Thanks, Agent Stiles.”
