She nods. “It’s been a long time since I moved.”

“You’ll get unpacked in time.”

She frowns at me. “I’ve been unpacked since before the weekend.”

“Really?” I moved into my house a few years ago and I still have unpacked boxes.

She nods. “Military spouse.”

“That explains it.”

“Thanks for letting Sammy garden. He’s missing his grandmother’s garden. He loves it as much as he loves superheroes. I’ll have to plant one next spring. We moved in a little too late this year.”

Another long pause before she lets loose a sigh. “Is it always going to be like this?”

I blink as I rise to my feet. “Like what?”

“Awkward. Weird.”

“I don’t feel awkward.” I’m aroused, and I want to steal a kiss…and more. But I don’t feel awkward at all.

“Well, then it’s just me.”

I cock my head and study her. Her breathing is just a little more erratic and I can see her pulse hammering in her throat. “Maybe it’s something else.”

“What?” She crosses her arms, which signals that she’s cutting herself off from me. Unfortunately for her, it only brings more attention to her breasts.

“You’ve got the hots for me.”

She glances over her shoulder, then back at me. “Mason.”

“I wouldn’t say it if the kids were around. Although it’s getting difficult trying to keep from kissing you.”

“No.”

“I get it. I’m too young, blah blah.”

She rolls her eyes. “You are. I have a lot of baggage and I have two kids who need me.”

I nod. “I get that. I still think you should think about going out on a date.”

“Hey, there, Vegas,” Avery yells across the yard.

“I’m gonna kill her,” Liv says.

“Don’t worry. Sammy already spilled the beans about that nickname.”

She covers her face with her hands. “My family.”

“I heard we’re supposed to go out tonight,” Avery yells from the back porch.

She glances over at her sister. “Yeah. The diner.”

“Score! I can’t wait to have a milkshake.”

Of course, Avery’s worry is the same as Sammy’s.

“Hey, Vegas, you should come with us.”
