“Boss?” Marco says, snapping his fingers in front of my face. I blink and focus on my floor manager. “You okay?”

“Yeah. I think.”

“You think? I said your name three times.”

This isn’t the first time one of my staff has said that to me. “I just had a revelation.”

He chuckles as he turns to help bus off one of the big round tables. “That sounds profound.”

Marco is one of the best hires I have ever made. He’s in his forties with three kids and an insane wife. And when I say insane, I mean insane. She makes my sister look normal.

“When did you know you were in love with Laura?”

He straightens and waits for the busboy to take the load of dishes, glasses, and silverware to the kitchen.

“You might want to be careful talking like that. You know the LOLs have their eyes on you.”

I shrug. “I don’t really care. I just need to know.”

He draws in a deep breath, and a smile stretches across his face. “The night I met Laura, I fell. It took me a few days to figure it out. Then I had to find her.”

“Find her?”

“Yeah. I lived in San Antonio, and she came into the restaurant I was working at. I was just a busboy at the time, hoping to move up to the waitstaff, and she sat in my section. If you think she’s crazy now, you should have known her then.” He shakes his head. “It was like everything in my world shifted, and she was the center. That’s when you know it’s love.”

I’ve never heard him speak like that.

“Why don’t you go on?”

“I need to help clean up. I took tomorrow off. At least, I hope I get to take tomorrow off.”

He rolls his eyes. “You know youarethe boss.”

“Yeah, but you know how I feel about management.”

He nods. “Then we need to get this done so you can get home.”

“Usually, you’re in a rush to get home.”

His smile fades. “Laura went on a girls’ trip to New Orleans.”

It’s nice to see a man in love with his wife after all these years. If I play my cards right, that could be me in a few years. In the past, I would have recoiled from the idea. But now, I want it more than I want my next breath.

We work well together, and within twenty minutes, we’re done. I realize I didn’t even think about getting the snacks I promised Liv. We’ve been texting the last few days but haven’t seen much of each other. The kids didn’t leave until this morning, so we both thought it best to wait until tonight for our date.

Me:Is there anything you want from The Mason Jar?

Liv:Only you.

I blink. That was straight and to the point. Her answer has my entire body lighting up. I was exhausted just a few minutes ago, but now I’m ready to go.

Me:On my way home. Need to clean up, then I’ll be over.

Liv:*thumbs up*

“You got the lock-up, Marco?”

“Yeah. Go on, boss.”
