“I did.”

“Do you miss it?”

“What I do now isn’t terribly different. I’d once hoped to work with Fatale. You probably know her as Merrigan. Anyway, I expected she’d take over as chief. When she passed on the job, I was quite disappointed, to be honest. Working with her now makes up for it.”

“Wait, I remember Merrigan saying she left MI6 a few years ago.”

Jacy cocked her head. “Yes.”

“Afewyears ago, I was still in high school. You don’t appear to be much older than me.”

“Thank you, but if that’s the case, I’m considerably older than you are.” She smiled. “I do hear that quite often. I’ve my mother to thank for my youthful appearance. The downside when I go out in the States is I’ve been accused of having a forged identification card.”

I chuckled and stared out the window. “Looks like we’ll be landing soon.”

“In advance of that, I’d like to brief you on what to expect.”

I turned my head toward her.

“A team will be joining us when we land at the Napa airfield. They will remain on your detail as long as necessary. It is unlikely you will be aware of their presence. However, you’ll be meeting them upon our arrival.” Jacy handed me a cell phone. “I’ve programmed the necessary numbers into your new phone, including your sister’s and mother’s.”

“What about Jada? She’s my best friend.”

“Ah, Yáñez, correct?”

“Yes.”

“Sorry. I forgot she was cleared.” Jacy swiped the screen and appeared to be entering contact information.

“You know her number?”

She nodded. “I’m afraid I’ve a photographic memory.”

“That would’ve been useful when I was getting my MBA.”

She smiled. “There are times it’s a curse as much as a blessing.”

“Prepare for landing,” Zin said from the cockpit. “We’ll be on the ground in under ten minutes.”

While I’d traveledvia private plane a few times in the last few weeks, I doubted I’d ever get used to looking out the window to see vehicles parked and waiting for our arrival.

When Jacy stood, I did too and followed her toward the front of the plane, where Zin was lowering the stairs we’d use to deboard.

“I’d like to wait for Press,” I said when he motioned for me to follow Jacy.

“I’m here,” he said, stepping up behind me. “Did Jacy brief you on the team meeting us?” he asked.

“She did.”

“I’ve not met any of them either, but if they’re part of the K19 crew, I’m sure they’re very good at what they do.”

With wide eyes, I watched five men pile out of the two SUVs parked within several yards of us. One of them, who appeared older than the others, stepped forward first.

“Luisa, I’d like to introduce Patton Abrams,” said Jacy.

He shook my hand. “Most people call me Tank, ma’am.” There was no question as to why they did. The man was built like an armored vehicle.

“And this is Lavery Barrett, aka Press, and Vaile Oliver, who most call Zin,” Jacy continued, motioning Tank over to them.
