“Oh, Mr. Lavery,” I heard the woman say. “They took your mother by helicopter. Your father went with her.”

Press held his phone to his ear. “He’s not answering. Which hospital?” he asked the woman.

“St. Helena.”

“How long ago did they leave?”

“Fifteen minutes ago,” she responded, checking her watch.

Press turned to me. “I’m sorry. I have to join my parents at the hospital.”

“Don’t apologize. Just go.”

“I’ll drive,” said Magnet as the two men raced back to the SUV.

“Let’s go inside,” said Jacy, leading me into the house.

Ichecked for missed calls, then rang my brother.

“Press?” he answered. “Are you home?”

“Something’s happened to Mum—”

“Wait. I can’t hear you over the music. Let me get outside. Okay. Go ahead.”

“I just arrived at the house. Mrs. Gonzales said our mother was taken to the hospital via helicopter. Father went with her. I’m on my way now.”

“Oh, God. I knew I should’ve come with you. I’ll make arrangements to leave now.”

Knowing I’d have news long before he could arrange for a flight, I didn’t bother telling him to hold off. “I’ll ring back as soon as I know something.”

“Thanks, Press, and I’m so sorry.”

I ended the call and tried my father a second time, to no avail.

Magnet pulled up to the emergency room entrance. “Thanks,” I said, jumping out and racing inside.

“Can I help you?” a woman sitting behind a counter just inside the doors asked.

“My mother was brought here via helicopter.”

“Name?”

“Susannah Barrett. My father, Martin Barrett, is with her.”

“Take a seat and I’ll check.”

“Take a seat?”

She picked up a phone but didn’t place a call. “Yes, sir. Please.”

I walked several feet away but had no intention of sitting down.

“Sir?” I heard her say a few seconds later. I approached. “Someone will be out to speak with you in a few minutes.”
