“What’s the honeymoon plan?” I asked.

“We’re holding off for now.”

“And that’snotbecause of me, right?” I rolled my eyes.

“You would do the same.”

We both raised our heads when there was a knock at the door and Tryst came inside. “What’s he doing here?” I whispered. “You’d think he’d be on his way to Napa too.”

“He is, but I guess he wanted to stop here first.”

“Why?” I’d no more than asked when I had my answer. Or it seemed that way. Before greeting anyone else, Tryst approached Jacy, and the two went outside. “Did you see that?” I asked Seraphina, who was busy filling her plate with food.

“See what?”

“Nothing. Never mind.” Telling her the way Tryst had rested his hand on Jacy’s lower back wouldn’t be as interesting as if she’d witnessed it herself.

My sister, my mom, Jada, and I were seated at the table, eating, when Jacy came back in alone and approached us. “Tryst said he’s sorry for not being able to spend more time here. He had to hurry to catch a flight to Napa. He asked me to inform you he’ll be back later this week.”

I wondered where I’d be then. More than likely, still here.

“You’ve been avoiding me since Luisa left,” said Beau, cornering me in my father’s study, where I’d gone to pour myself a brandy.

While we both knew it was a lie, I still denied it. “I’ve more important matters to attend to.”

“I’m her son too.”

I stared down my brother. “What’s this about? Do you feel as though decisions have been made without your input? There weren’t any I’m aware of.” I skirted around him, stalked out of the room, and ran straight into Zin. Thankfully, none of the brandy spilled. I brought the glass to my lips and took a drink.

“I’d ask if you were okay, but I know better.”

“Leave it alone, mate.”

“Now is not the time for the two of you to get into it over Luisa.”

My eyes bored into his in the same way they had with my brother. “Watch it, Zin, or you’ll find yourself on the receiving end ofmyfist.”

“She isn’t your responsibility. There’s a team of people ensuring her safety. In fact, it might be better if Los Caballeros let K19 take it from here.”

“What are you on about?”

“You’ve spent the last two months following Luisa Reeve around like a puppy dog.”

“Sod off, Zin,” I spat. I stalked away, but spun around when I felt him on my heels. “I mean it. Get the fuck away from me.” I pointed to the door. “You know your way out.”

“Press, I’m your best friend. I’m looking out for you. That’s it.”

“I don’t need you or anyone elselooking outfor me.Leave me alone!” I hurled my empty glass at the wall, and it shattered. I took the stairs two at a time and was almost to my bedroom door when my father came out of his. I took several deep breaths to calm myself.

“What is going on, Lavery?”

“Sorry, Dad.”

He walked over to me and put his hand on my shoulder. “Don’t apologize. Tell me what’s going on.”
