Seraphina smiled. “I couldn’t love you more than I do, Luisa, but you and Press…”

“What about us?”

“I’ve never seen two people less aware.”

I folded my arms and rested against the chair. “Explain, please.”

She rolled her eyes. “As soon as you pull your head out of the sand, you’ll see it for yourself.”

When she got up and left the kitchen, I didn’t follow.

“You’ve spoken with Beau,” I said, finding my dad in his study, sitting behind his desk.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you say?”

“I knew you’d ask questions for which I had no answers.”

“Where is he?”

“Nowhere in particular.”

I took a seat. “This is tedious, Father, even for you.”

When he winced, I regretted my words as much as my tone. “We all process grief in our own way, son.”

“He has responsibilities.”

My father sighed. “As I said before, I can handle them. Honestly, Lavery, staying busy will help me cope as well.”

I understood, recalling I’d thought as much about Luisa. That staying busy would keep me from thinking about how much I missed her. I doubted it would, in the same way I doubted my father would think of my mother any less.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

My father raised a brow and cocked his head. “Do you really need to ask?”

I’d go on about how unfair my brother’s actions were, but it would only result in my dad insisting he didn’t need me to stay on in Napa. “Did he take the plane?” I asked instead. The question was ridiculous. He could hardly fly it solo.

“He did not.”

“Zin suggested I bring Luisa on to help with things here. She has an MBA and could assist with many of the daily tasks related to the financial management of our family’s holdings.”

My father nodded.

“You’re already aware of this as well?” While my frustration over my brother’s actions had dissipated slightly, the idea that other conversations were taking place, essentially circumventing me, made me angry.

“No one has spoken with me about this, Lavery. I was merely nodding to indicate I was listening.”

“My apologies,” I muttered under my breath.

“Tell me your concerns.”

“You did say you were aware she’s facing an imminent threat. If we agree to hire her, bring her here, it would necessitate additional security.”
