“If Doc would allow it, I’m certain Sorcha would usurp Merrigan’s role as managing partner of K19 Security Solutions.”

“What do you say, son? Time to call it a night?” said Martin, approaching us.

“We should do.” Press stood, holding his hand out to me. I stood too, and like earlier, he leaned in close. “Sure I can’t convince you to come with us?”

The only thing I was sure of was if I did, I’d be tempted to crawl in bed with Press, invited or not. And it would be “not.” He’d never once hit on me. Rather, he’d settled into the role of big brother, protector, and best friend. Until tonight, it was the only way I’d seen him. I couldn’t expect him to have an instant epiphany like I had. And maybe tomorrow, when I saw him again, I wouldn’t feel the same magnetic pull I felt now.

“Luisa?”

“Sorry. No, I can’t.”

“Understood.” He looked across the room at Sorcha. “Shall I plan to return in time for your phone call, or would you prefer to handle it with Rua?”

“Rua?”

“I’ve heard a rumor it was her code name back in the day.”

“Maybe I should ask her if she’d mind.”

Press chuckled. “It’s your phone call, pet.”

“Right. Yes, I’d like you to be here, at least for moral support.”

“Happy to be. Shall I walk you to the cottage before we leave?”

“Yes, please. I’ll say good night first.”

“As will I.”

I tucked my arm in his like I had earlier and motioned to my mother, who nodded.

“It warms my heart to see you two together. We’ve missed you around here,” Sorcha said to Press when he and I approached her.

I waited for him to argue, tell Sorcha we weren’t “together,” but he only thanked her for her hospitality.

“Are you stayin’ here tonight, then?” she asked.

“At Seahorse. But I’ll return before zero eight hundred.”

“Shame,” she said, nudging me with her elbow.

“Sorcha,” Laird admonished.

She rolled her eyes and winked at me before saying good night.

“I fear Sorcha is getting the wrong idea about you and me,” Press said when we followed my mother to the cottage’s front door.

“She’s not the only one,” I mumbled more than said.

“My apologies.”

“What for?”

“If people getting the wrong impression about you and me makes you uncomfortable.”

“It doesn’t.” I leaned up, kissed his cheek, and went inside, closing the door behind me. Instinctively, I knew I didn’t want to hear whatever he was about to say. I wanted to fall asleep thinking about how I felt when I was with him tonight. How it felt as though things had changed between us. And tomorrow, if we were back to however it was before, I’d accept it.

I’d just finished brushing my teeth, washing my face, and changing into the sweats and T-shirt I slept in when my phone vibrated. I threw myself on the bed and grabbed it, hoping it was Press, asking if I wanted him to read to me before I went to sleep.
