I looked up and saw Jaicon, Magnet, and Tank were headed in our direction.
Press followed my line of sight. “Where are you now?”
“Still at my place.”
“I’ll ring you back.”
Press ended the call and met the group at the front door. “Jada Yáñez is missing,” he said, waving them inside before they had a chance to speak.
“We intercepted something,” said Jaicon, looking from me to Press.
“What?” I asked.
“Another message.”
I felt dizzy and grabbed Press’ arm.
“Give us a minute,” he said, leading me into a living room I hadn’t been in before and over to a sofa. “Tell me how you want to handle this, Luisa.”
I knew what he was asking. Did I want to know what the message was, or did I want him to shield me from it? I gripped both his hands with mine. The idea that I’d be in here alone while he read it, scared me. Knowing what the message was, terrified me. “I don’t know.”
“Press?” said Jaicon from behind me. “This is urgent.”
He studied me, and I nodded.
“You’re certain?” he asked.
“I can do this as long as you’re with me.”
“Come in,” he said, motioning to her.
“It was sent from Ms. Yáñez’s phone,” she began.
“Is she alive?” I whispered.
Jaicon’s eyes met mine. “She is.”
“He has her, doesn’t he?”
She nodded.
“My God,” I heard Press say under his breath.
I put my hand in front of my mouth to stifle the sound that came from somewhere deep in my chest. I could not lose it.Couldn’t.That Jaicon was here meant this involved me somehow. “Tell me,” I said, squaring my shoulders and tightening my grip on Press’ hands.
She sat down on the other side of me. “This message came in the form of a video. It is of a woman we believe is Ms. Yáñez. She has been tortured.”
As sick as I felt, I knew I had to hear the rest.
“The person who sent it has very specific instructions. He will free Ms. Yáñez—”
“Her name is Jada,” I said.
“He will free Jada in exchange for Luisa. He has explicit instructions.”
“No fucking way,” Press seethed. His eyes conveyed the same panic I felt but knew I had to tamp down.
“What are the instructions?” I asked.
