“They just arrived. They should be at your door.” His voice sounds as upset as mine.

“Lilah Robbie?” the guys says through the door when he spots me.

I nod.

“We’re here to escort you to the airport.”

“Okay,” I say to Jimmy.

“I’m sorry I’m not there to help you with Monica. She must be freaked out,” Jimmy says.

I back away from the door and open it, keeping myself behind the shield of the door so the reporters can’t see me. The large man steps in and eyes the bags to his left.

“Is this everything?” he asks.

“Yes. I just have to get my purse and my daughter.”

“I’ll take this to the vehicle and come right back to escort you both.” He steps out with all of our bags.

“Okay, thanks,” I say in a small voice, shutting the door. “This man is intense to say the least.”

I rush back to my bedroom.

“They’re supposed to be. They’ll keep you both safe.”

“Okay, I have to get Monica ready. Talk to you soon.” I’m about to remove the phone from my ear.

“Lilah?”

I stop before entering my bedroom. “Yeah.”

“I’m so sorry. I’m sorry I’m not there. I’m sorry my career is uprooting your life.”

My back falls to the wall. “Jimmy, you being a part of Monica’s life and having to deal with the press is better than you not being in her life. Don’t worry about her, I’ll make sure she’s fine.”

Silence echoes back to me. “I know you will. Let me know as soon as you’re on the plane.”

“Yeah.”

I hang up, wrapping my way around the fact he trusts me with his daughter, and even though she’s new to his world, she’s his whole world in this moment.

I put on my happy face and enter my bedroom. “Okay, kiddo, it’s time to go. Are you ready for an adventure?”

“Yeah!” She slides off the bed until her feet hit the hardwood.

“Okay, you remember everything I told you?”

She nods, her mouth a thin line.

“Okay, jump up into my arms and I’m going to wrap you in a blanket. Ready?”

“Ready, Mommy.”

She leaps in my arms and I pull her up against me, squeezing tightly, and place a kiss onto her blonde hair. Tears well in my eyes as I cover her with her mermaid comforter.

True to what I told Jimmy, this will be worth it for Monica to have an amazing father in her life. But what those vultures will be surprised about is I have a mama bear side and I’m not afraid to show it.
