She cocked her head to the side with a questioning look on her face.

“You’re a champagne girl. Not some ...” he waved his hand at her, “Goody two-shoes, school teacher.” He leaned his head forward, the light accentuating his chiseled jawline. “Act like it.”

She rolled her eyes and shook her head, offended. Everything he said was either degrading or insulting. She opened her mouth to give a cocky reply, but before she could, he cleared his throat.

“Ah-ah,” he reprimanded, waving his finger at her again. “What happens if you try to manipulate me?” he said with another smile. She pursed her lips.

“You’ll catch me,” she answered with disapproval.

“Exactly,” he said, sitting at his desk. “Go get some champagne for room seventeen.”

She turned to walk out the door before he called her back.

“Elizabeth?”

She turned around and falsely smiled. “Yes, boss?”

He pointed to her bag. “There’s more where that came from if you do a good job.”

She thought of the wad of cash she got for justsayingshe needed help with rent. Deciding this may not be the worst opportunity in the world, she opened the door to the office and stepped out into the loud club.

Chapter8

Ben

The cigar smoke of the secret lounge never failed to make Ben cringe. He hated when his clothes smelled like the Don’s Montecristos. Letting him use Sinsations as his personal party each night was the least he could do after all the Don had done for him.

Ben walked into the room, getting a glance from a tall redhead. She was pretty, but not one of his girls. The Don preferred to have his own personal selection of women entertain him at night.

“Don,” Ben said, nodding his head in respect.

“Benicio,” the Don replied stoically, waving the woman away. As she strolled off, Ben watched him take a large puff of his cigar. His intimidating gaze peered through the suffocating smoke. “What news do you bring me?”

Ben stood straight with his arms behind his back. Always be in position when you address the Don. He learned that the hard way years ago.

Ben looked to the side at the Don’s women, watching them pour champagne flutes. He watched their fake tits and lips as they seductively struck poses for him. He couldn’t help but think of Liz. How naturally perfect her body was.

He snapped out of his thoughts and faced the Don once more.

“I’ve found someone who can watch the family members that we think are setting us up.”

“Danny?” he asked, puffing his cigar.

“No,” Ben said, walking closer to the Don. “A girl.”

The Don paused and ashed his cigar. “You brought,” he paused, lowering his voice, “an outsider to spy on the family?”

“She has a lot of money problems,” Ben said. “Along with that, she seems to have a … thing for me.”

“I don’t think that’s substantial enough to keep her trust,” the Don said. “I don’t like it.”

“She’s mentally strong and persuasive.”

Before he could finish his sentence, the Don waved his cigar. “Be sure to take her on a little … vacation to South America if she fucks us over. Or …” He paused. “When she’s of no use to us anymore.”

“I don’t believe that’s necessary,” Ben said with a knot in his throat.

“No loose ends,” the Don said, raising his voice. Ben knew better than to question him, but he couldn’t take her to South America. That wouldn’t be a vacation for her. It was a trip to the afterlife.
