Liz looked down at her plate. She had only eaten half her omelet. “Now?”

“I have to be up early,” he said, gazing at her.

He called the waitress over, and she handed him the bill. In a quick flash, he signed it and led her out of the diner.See? He just ended dinner early. Clearly, I’m not intriguing,Liz thought to herself as he opened the Mercedes door for her. She smiled and got in, disappointment sinking through her chest.

They pulled up to her apartment complex, parking in front of the door.

“Thanks for dinner or rather breakfast,” Liz said with an obviously disappointed tone.

“You’re welcome,” Ben said, placing his arm over the steering wheel.

“I’ll see you tomorrow night?” she asked, grabbing her bag and avoiding eye contact with him.

“Liz,” he said in a deep, sincere tone. She looked at him and saw that same look in his eyes he had that night in her apartment. He motioned his chin toward her apartment door.

“I’d like to walk you upstairs.”

Liz stared at him for a second with her mouth open in shock. He had a knack for asking a question and making someone feel like they couldn’t say no. She turned her head toward the apartment door, then back at him.

She had to say no. This was probably what he did with all the girls. She didn’t want to just be some one-night stand or a secret agent for him.

Then she noticed his pecs barely contained within his suit. His biceps filled the sleeves perfectly. His lips slightly parted while he smiled, revealing gleaming white teeth.

She felt herself getting wet at the thought of him in her apartment again. She wanted to run her fingers along his abs, feel him force her against the wall again. Even if it was only for one night, she had to know what it would be like. She’d never get this chance again.

“All right,” she said quietly.

Chapter10

Liz

Once they were inside Liz's apartment, Ben made himself comfortable on the sofa while Liz offered to make them coffee. She felt anxious but curious. Scared but excited to be alone with him again.

The weight of his stare dragged on Liz's back as she started a pot of coffee. She stayed turned away as her cheeks flushed over how much she was enjoying having his attention. It was clear they had some sort of connection, but it wasn't like anything she had experienced before.

The danger he brought with him excited her, but she couldn't let him know. She wouldn’t embarrass herself like that. He may be at the top of his organization, but they were both still just people. It didn’t mean anything.

When the java was ready, she grabbed two mugs and headed to the sofa. Then she took a seat next to him.

The silence was deafening, and it made her ears ring as she tried to ignore it. It was almost too easy to break, so she took advantage of the quiet and looked down at her hands to distract herself.

"So you're in law school?" Ben asked after a moment of silence passed by them.

It was strange that he was trying to make small talk, but she decided to go along with it. If they were going to get somewhere, then maybe it would help to build trust between them.

"Yeah," she replied with a nod.

"That could come in handy for me. I could always use a good lawyer with as many visits to the courtroom as I've had," he replied with a chuckle. It sounded genuine enough, though, which only served to put her more at ease. She hoped he was actually being friendly when talking about something other than work.

"I'd be honored." That was the most honest answer she was going to give him. He nodded as if satisfied by what she said, so she returned his nod.

After a few moments of silent waiting, he spoke again. "How did you end up in law? I would think you'd do better than criminal defense or something."

He was probably not looking to make friends, so that should be the last thing she should consider. But if he thought he was going to get through her walls, then he was sorely mistaken.

So she leaned in close and began to tell him about all the time she had spent in court over the years, laughing when he joined in on her jokes. And even if he was just doing that so they could establish a relationship that he could use to manipulate her, she found herself hoping that he enjoyed it too.

"You know you are very beautiful," he finally said.
