He looked down at her, and a surge of want ran through him. It had been years, and she never failed to make him feel the way he did when he first saw her.

“I love you too,” he said, leaning down to kiss her.

He got up and held out his hand. She took it and stood with him, smiling as she walked to the kitchen.

Liz turned to face him, beaming. “Oh! Guess what?” she said with excitement.

“What?” he asked happily.

She was adorable when she was excited. He couldn’t help but feed off her optimistic energy. She was magnetic and influential. She still amazed him every day.

“Someone,” she said, grinning and dragging her fingers along the countertop as she walked to the fridge. “Got a ninety-seven percent on her exam.”

“What?” he said enthusiastically, grinning from ear to ear. “Ninety-seven?”

“Mmm-hmm!” she said, laughing.

“Baby!” he exclaimed, picking her up again and placing her on the kitchen counter. He held her tightly. “That’s amazing!”

“I know!” she said, smiling and shaking her head. “I really thought I wouldn’t be able to pass!”

“But, of course, you did,” he said, staring at her with admiration.

He picked up her left hand and kissed it, admiring the wedding band he had customized for her. That was a sight that would always make him smile.

“Because you are the most determined woman in the world,” he said, brimming with excitement.

She rolled her eyes and smiled. “Thank you, baby,” she said, stroking his hair back.

“Mrs. Moretti, attorney at law,” he said, playfully swaying her back and forth.

“Not yet,” she chastised, playfully hitting his chest.

“Well, we got the first part down,” he said, kissing her.

She laughed. “Thank God for that.”

She kissed him and got down from the counter, snatching up her bag from the dining room table. That damn bag had followed them since the beginning. It was tattered and torn now but carried more than just her books. It was a testament to their journey and their dedication to each other.

“I have to run to my 8:30,” she said, packing her books. “Are we still on for dinner tonight?”

“Actually,” he said, leaning on the counter. “I was thinking we could eat at home.”

“Okay,” she answered, confused. “Everything all right?”

“Absolutely. You’ll see,” he said, kissing her. “Go. I’ll see you later.”

“All right, honey.” She kissed him once more before rushing out.

He watched her go. She had a confident gait now and was beginning to see herself as he saw her. He couldn’t wish for anything more.

Ben watchedas the sun began to set over the tops of the buildings. The dusk breeze was nice after a hot day.

“No, a little to the left.” He motioned to the man on the ladder, who adjusted the garlands.

“Like this?”
