That must have been the inspiration for the dream. But, God, what a magnificent dream. Even in dreams, the orgasms were mind-blowing. If real life was anywhere remotely as good, then she had a lot to look forward to. It would be worth the wait.

He carried her to bed, which was sweet and so amazingly sexy. He had unimaginable strength, but he used that strength to carry her upstairs and protect her. Then, he tucked her into her own bed like a gentleman. It must have been hard, considering that he must feel the attraction too.

She took a little more time than usual to get ready. She wanted to make it so that Deimos was unable to look away when she came down in the morning. She kept replaying visions of yesterday, from getting the cows’ tests taken, soaring across the planet and meeting other ranchers, to dinner and dancing, and finally basking in each other as they watched a movie. Or, more accurately, I thought about him with a movie in the background.

She put on eyeshadow the color of the burnt reddish-orange soil of Nova Aurora to bring out her eyes and hair. She was getting used to Deimos’s clothes and decided that she would wear a casual yet feminine white and green dress, one that looked effortlessly chic without trying too hard.

The scent of cooking greeted Hope as she walked into the kitchen. Deimos was hunched over the stove, which gave Hope a perfect opportunity to inconspicuously catch an extra look at his amazingly hot ass in jeans.

“Good morning … it smells delicious in here,” Hope said, smiling with her voice.

“Thanks,” Deimos said, almost in a grunt.

He took the eggs off the burner, and when he turned, he didn’t look like the same sweet guy who had carried her to bed and tucked her in last night.

That hot ass has a bug in it this morning.

He took the pan off the burner and put a plate of scrambled eggs and toast on the table for each of them.

“I’d give you a glass of milk, but … well, you know,” Deimos said, then pursed his lips.

“So … how’s your morning going?” Hope asked with trepidation.

“It’s fine. I’m a little fixated on getting the lab results. And I’ve been known to be kind of an asshole when something takes longer than it should. Occupational hazard of being an alpha, I guess.”

She breathed a sigh of relief. His mood had nothing to do with her.

“You know what? I have an idea. I’m going to make sandwiches out of the eggs and toast and wrap them up. We can eat while we walk,” Hope said.

“Um, okay. Is this some kind of weird Earth ritual that I’m not familiar with yet?”

She laughed.

“No, silly … it’s so we can go to the field and check on the cows. Who wants to waste time eating food inside? As lovely a house as this is, both of us are going to be thinking about the cows the whole time we are eating anyway. Might as well go to them instead of being cooped up here and worrying about them.”

She tapped her skull with her fingertips.

He smiled ear to ear, brightening for the first time that day.

She wrapped the sandwiches in parchment paper and put them into a brown paper sack with apples and napkins. They walked across the ranch to the cow pastures as they ate.

Reyla was already at the fence, anticipating their arrival from their smell and sound.

“Good morning, sweet boy,” Deimos said as Reyla licked his hand with his giant tongue. “Well, that’s one way to start the day. This one, I never have to wait for him.”

He wiped the big pool of cow spit with one of the napkins Hope packed.

“What would I do without you?” he asked.

“Be a big slobbered-on mess?”

They both laughed.

Every time the two of them laughed, they drifted closer together, almost leaning into a kiss by instinct. Then, realizing what was happening, they immediately straightened their posture.

“So, we definitely need to name a cow Marley,” Deimos said.

“After we’ve found out what’s going on and the herd recovers … because it will … we can call the first calf that’s born Marley.”
