Deimos chuckled. “No! No challenge. But being a veterinary assistant, I would think you’re pretty fit, working with small animals and large ones, right?”

Hope gazed into the air, considering. “I think so. If an animal, small or large, just won’t cooperate, well, I have to work hard with them. I was working with a beautiful orange cat right before I came here. I had to inject him with his vaccinations, and he did not want that.” She showed Deimos her forearm.

“Oh! I hope that’s healing.”

“Yeah. It is. It’s an occupational hazard, so we know that we have to treat injuries like this right away.”

“Is it true what they say? Something about ‘cat scratch fever’?”

“It is. And it can get serious.”

The next morning,Hope was up early. She couldn’t wait to go to the island. She hurried through her shower, then dried her hair and put on a small amount of makeup. Remembering what Deimos had said about walking all over the castle, she chose to dress in comfortable clothing and shoes. Still, she wanted to look attractive for him.

Hurrying to the kitchen, she smelled coffee and breakfast cooking.

“Hello.”

“Well.” Deimos paused, unable to say anymore. He gazed at her jeans and comfortable shoes. Then, his gaze trailed up Hope’s body to her top …a loose, silky top with three-quarter-length sleeves. It followed the curves of her body. “Uh …c-coffee and breakfast are just about ready.”

Hope grinned. She saw that she definitely had an effect on Deimos.

“Thank you. Mmm, smells good.” Walking next to him, her shoulder brushed against his arm as she peered at the eggs and bacon. “You like your meat, huh?”

Deimos just stared at Hope, unable to speak. Then, his voice seemed to come back. “Uh … yes. I … wait! You know I like meat. I’m a dragon shifter.”

Hope giggled and began plating the bacon. “Good. Eggs are just about done. What about toast?”

“Instead of toast, I decided on a traditional breakfast bread. It looks like a pita because the flour is purple.”

“Like the trees?”

“Yes. And they taste a little richer too.” Deimos reached into the hot oven and pulled out a baking sheet with two large pita-style pieces of bread. “These are bikas.”

“Can we put butter on them?”

“Yes, along with jellies and jams.”

Hope took their two filled plates to the breakfast table.

Placing the bikas on a plate, Deimos followed her, admiring her backside.

“This looks delicious.” Hope carefully cut her bikaopen and slid the butter inside. As she took a careful bite, her eyes widened.

“Mmm. This tastes like wine! Uhhh … does it have any alcohol content?”

Deimos, about to put food in his mouth, put the fork back on his plate and tried not to laugh too hard.

“You … you have nothing … to worry … about.” He couldn’t hold his laughter back.

Hope waited him out.

Finally, Deimos was able to stop laughing.

“Forgive me. I didn’t mean to laugh. You’re still new here. No, these have no alcohol content to them. Most foods here are similar to those you have on Earth, even if they look and taste different. We’d better hurry and finish so we can meet the yacht.”

Hope finished her breakfast, marveling over the bread she had just eaten … though the taste was rich, it was still so good.
