Jia laughed. “You didn’t. I could hear the shift in your voice. So, who is she?”

Jia was a shifter herself, so he didn’t have to hide the truth from her. She was married and had three kids. She cleaned to get away from the disaster that was her home.

“She’s my mate,” he admitted leaning into the counter. He’d never said it out loud, and hearing the words made him smile. “And she doesn’t know. So, I’m trying to take this slow.”

“Ahh. When are you going to tell her?”

He sighed, unsure. He didn’t know the right time. Was there a right time?

When do you tell someone you’re meant to be together? Even if you are from different planets.

“Not right now. There is just so much other stuff going on. That’s honestly the last thing I should be worried about at the moment.”

He could hear her clicking her tongue. He imagined she was nodding. “Well, when you do, just know it’s sometimes a surprise to other people. It certainly shocked my hubby.”

He remembered Jia telling him how she had told her husband she was a dragon. He didn’t believe her, so she had to shift.

“I’ll be leaving in just a little bit. I should be there in about an hour.”

“Thank you, Jia.” He hung up, taking a long sip of his coffee. He had many things on his plate, indeed.

He left a little after finishing his coffee and wrote a note for Jia with a few things she could clean while she was there. He also left a message for Hope explaining he was going to the lab and that he would be back later.

While he flew, he wondered what the lab’s results would include. He wondered even more about what they found. Was there something wrong with the way he was taking care of the cows? Or was it a nature kind of thing?

He arrived at the lab, a large, sleek building near the heart of the city. He sighed, heading inside. It wasn’t his first time visiting the place. He’d been there many times when he first started raising cows. He had wanted to make sure everything was ready for them.

He headed inside and found Ryn working the counter. He smiled, scribbling his name on the sign-in sheet. Then he heard the heavy footsteps of Lou.

“Deimos, you made it. Glad you got here so quickly.”

“Well, you called early in the ass crack of dawn, and you made it sound urgent. Didn’t really give me a choice.”

Lou took his harsh words, and they slid over him. “It is urgent. Come, come into my lab.”

He followed after him down a narrow hallway and into Lou’s lab. The space was large, and his assistant sat over a microscope, scribbling away.

“Afternoon, Wess,” he said, giving the man a side glance. Wess gave a nod, not removing his eyes from his work.

“I got the results.” Lou grabbed a paper sliding it toward him on the table. “Interesting results, for sure.”

He looked at the paper and scowled. “Lou, we’ve been over this. You can’t just show me the results and expect me to understand what they mean.”

Lou glared at him. Lou wasn’t someone that liked to dumb things down.

Wess spoke up this time in a calmer tone. “Your water is fucked up. And it’s making your cows sick.” Wess pulled his eyes up.

“Now, can I continue counting? Or will you two continue to bicker?”

He waved a hand, taking the paper. He gave Lou a smile. “Thanks. Let me know if you find anything else.”

He turned and left, looking at the paper. He didn’t know what any of it meant, and he hoped that Hope would be able to explain it to him better.

He went out to his vehicle and decided to head over to his house for a while to do a few things that needed to be done for the dragons. He could get that done and go home later to talk to Hope about the results.
