In the locked closet, he could hear Hope rustling. She jumped up, unlocking and opening the door. Relief rushed through him when she poked her head out.

“Deimos! Are you all right?”

His face lit up with a tired smile. “I am. We shifters heal rapidly.” Indeed, some of the bloody cuts had begun to heal, vanishing as he lifted his arm for Hope to watch.

“But … what does that mean for possible infection?”

“With no open areas on our skin, germs can’t get in. Therefore, we are at a lower chance of developing infections. Look at Qev and Thyone.”

Hope turned and saw Deimos’s friends. Like Deimos, they were also healing.

“Are … are all of them dead? What about Tura?”

“All dead or down, including Tura.” Deimos reached out and pulled Hope into his side. Relief filled him. His mate was safe, his cows would heal, and he couldn’t be happier.

TWENTY-FIVE

HOPE

She stood looking over everything with Deimos. They had won. The battle was over, and they had come out on top. She could hardly contain her excitement.

Her stomach jumped into her throat, realizing what that meant. Everything was over. The fighting and trying to figure everything out were done. They were free.

She turned to Deimos and threw her arms around him. “It’s over!”

Deimos looked at her, and a smile spread across his face. He spun her, holding her closer to his chest. She held him tightly, knowing she could have lost everything, but she didn’t. Deimos had won, and now, she could live her life.

They figured out what was wrong with the cows, and they had defeated the person hurting them. They also managed to tear down someone who had bad intentions for Nova Aurora.

They could be together, and she was staying on Nova Aurora with him. She was going to be with Deimos forever.

“I love you so much,” Deimos said, pulling her closer. He pressed her forehead against her forcing her to look deep into his eyes. “And I will never allow anything bad to ever happen to you. I promise this. You are my life. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you.”

Her heart skipped a beat. Just moments ago, Deimos had confessed he loved her. And then the battle, and now everything was finished. She pulled her hand up and kissed him.

They meshed together until someone cleared their throat behind them. Deimos pulled back, and they both turned. Thyone stood a few steps away, looking uncomfortably at the ceiling.

“I know this is a really beautiful moment for you two, with you ending a battle and all, but if you continue, I will vomit all over the floor.” He pulled his eyes to Deimos. “I swear to the goddess, all over the floor.”

She felt embarrassed and stepped back. She’d lost her composure and quickly tried to pull herself together. She patted her hair down and gave a gentle smile. “Sorry, Thyone. We got caught up in the moment.”

He looked at Deimos and waved a hand. “Now that you two are pulled apart. How would you like us to proceed?”

Deimos looked around at all the wreckage surrounding them. There were a few injured dragons, and there were the dead. A fire flickered, and it smelled strongly of death and blood. In normal circumstances, she would be afraid, shaking in fear. But she wasn’t because Deimos stood next to her. He surveyed the area with a sad expression.

“Clean up and call the authorities. The battle is done, but we still need to tell the families of those who died.”

She flinched. There were people who were gone, and they weren’t coming back. She looked at Deimos, knowing there were a few that he knew. She reached out, grabbing his hand. She gave it a squeeze wanting to reassure him she was still there.

Everyone was moving, and everything happened so quickly. Dragons took off, and the authorities arrived. She was questioned, but her mind was swimming. She looked at Deimos, who was being looked at for more injuries.

She rubbed her eyes as the officer tilted her head. “Hope, did you hear me?”

She blinked, looking at the officer. She’d been talking to her, but she couldn’t focus on her. “I’m sorry, what?”

“I asked if you were hurt?”

“No.” She shook her head. She looked at Deimos, who was looking at her. “I’m fine. Honestly, I’m just tired, is all. It’s been a long day.”
