“That’s the thing,” her father began, leaning forward and clasping his hands on his desk. “They seem to be a mix between a human and some animal, something they have never seen before. They need someone with great expertise to head the investigation, someone they can trust.”

Charlie narrowed her eyes and turned slightly to the side, suspicious of what her father was saying. “Okay,” she said slowly.

“And I told them,” her father continued, “I had just the person for the job and could deliver their new investigation lead by tomorrow.”

“Dad,” Charlie said, her eyes wide with excitement. “Do you mean …”

“It’s you, my girl!” he exclaimed, throwing his hands in the air.

Charlie covered her mouth with her hands before jumping up and running to hug her father. “Dad!” she exclaimed. “Oh, my God! This is insane!”

He embraced her tightly. “It’s what you’re meant to do, Charlie.”

She walked back to the chair and stood behind it, shaking her head with her mouth open in awe.

“Wait … by tomorrow?” she asked with sudden concern.

Her father nodded. “You’ll be going to Yinnenndel.”

“Yinnendel?” she asked, surprised.

“What’s wrong with that?”

“Nothing,” she said, laughing. “Only that it has some of the richest soil in the world; I mean, do you know how many remains could be condensed, buried so deep down there? We could find so much more than just those remains and chunks of history that have just vanished!”

Her father laughed. “I’m so glad you’re happy, Charlie.”

Her smile faded as the thought crossed her mind of wanting to tell Hammer. She slowly felt her heart sink into her chest and gripped the chair tightly, clearing her throat.

“Honey,” her father started seriously. “Are you doing all right?”

“Yeah,” she said, faking a smile. “Yeah, no, this is great! I’m excited!”

“Honey, about Hammer,” her father began.

“Don’t,” she said sadly. “It’s okay, and it was for the best.”

Her father pursed his lips and nodded sadly before clapping his hands together and standing.

“Well,” he said, sighing. “We better get you on your way.”

“Yeah,” she said, staring off into space.

She pictured Hammer’s reaction to the news. She knew he would be so excited for her that he would love to visit the countryside. He would probably take her into his arms tightly and spin her around, laughing with her.

“Charlie?” her father’s voice broke her thoughts.

“Yeah,” Charlie said, snapping back to reality, looking at a plane ticket in his hand.

“Did you hear me?”

“Uh, no, sorry,” she said, shaking her head.

“You’re on the seven o’clock flight tonight, and you should be leaving your place to get to the airport around four.”

“Got it,” she said, stepping forward and taking the plane ticket from her father.

She hugged him before leaving his office. She grabbed the door handle and turned to face her father.
