“This is…” I half turn, but that’s all I manage before I experience a sharp pain in my arm and my world turns dark.

CHAPTER36

DOM

Ihave never been so angry. In fact, I can’t even speak my mind is racing so fast. I know this is a setup. Diana lied to me and said I had twenty-four hours, so why the fuck am I facing these charges now?

I just pray Pasquale gets Flora to safety before Diana finds her, because there is no doubt in my mind she wants Flora back along with the money and I’m guessing she hates that her sister is free and finally happy. If there is anyone I hate more than Diana, it’s that fucker Mario and as soon as I get the hell out of here, neither one of them will be safe from me.

After the usual shit, I am thrown into a cell to burn with anger, and it takes a further hour before I’m granted my single call.

My brother Leonardo answers immediately.

“Who is this?”

“Leo, it’s Dom.”

“What the fuck’s going on? What is this number?”

“Fucking jail, man. They’ve arrested me for the murder of Senator Billings and Desdemona Gray.”

“Fucking bastards.” His hiss of anger matches my own, and he growls, “I’ve got you, brother. I’ll call Declan Cole; he’ll get you out in no time.”

Declan Cole is the most feared attorney around and my heart sags with relief. He knows all the official’s weaknesses and will be putting in a call to the chief of police within seconds of Leo’s call.

“Just get me the fuck out of here. Flora’s vulnerable.”

Leo lowers his voice. “Where is she?”

“Back at the house. Pasquale should be there by now, and I instructed him to take her to the retreat.”

Leo takes a minute and then says with concern, “There are no cars at the retreat. I’ve got the image on my monitor.”

We all have access to our family’s bolt hole that is heavily monitored by surveillance. His words are unwelcome, and I shout, “Fuck!”

Leo says calmly, “Settle down. I’ll deal with it. You concentrate on getting out of there and leave the rest to me.”

The cop nudges me and I say angrily, “I’ve got to go. Just make sure Flora’s safe, that’s all I ask.”

He cuts the call leaving me feeling so helpless I want to smash something and yet the only thing to hand is the cop by my side, so with a groan, I allow him to escort me back to my cell where I hope to God, Declan Cole will visit soon.

As I wait,I try to piece together the events that led me here, and the only reason I can think of is the money we stole. Why is Flora so important to Diana? It doesn’t make sense that she’d do all of this just to get her sister home. I know how her mind works and there must be something bigger that I’m not seeing.

I totally get that she wants me and my brothers removed from the family. Without us to challenge them, Diana and Mario can take over the Ortega empire and finally have a family of their own. Just contemplating Diana’s fascination with that low life pimp shocks me because he’s a weasley little fucker who belongs on the streets selling whores and crack, not as the don of a well-established crime family.

So many things rattle through my mind as I wait for someone to move this on and when the door flies open, I breathe a sigh of relief because standing there is the man who is going to get me the hell out of here.

“Domenico.”

Declan shakes his head in disgust and sits beside me on the narrow bunk and lowers his voice. “The detective’s timing was impeccable.”

“What do you mean?”

I’m confused and he whispers, “The chief of police is on vacation. He’s currently in mid-air and won’t land for another eight hours. There’s nobody else who can authorize your release.”

“You had better be fucking kidding me.” I hiss darkly and he shrugs, not at all intimidated by me. Then again, this man is probably the only man alive who intimidates me and so I back down and say tightly, “I didn’t kill them. I’ve been set up.”
