A knock on the door interrupts her speech, and she leaves at once, locking the door behind her.

As the silence wraps around my shivering body, the demons circling tell me they’re coming for my soul because it’s doubtful I’m going to survive this latest attack, even though I will die trying.

CHAPTER40

DOM

One hour is one hell of a countdown when the life of the person you love hangs in the balance.

I’m not sure how I get through the journey at all, and to keep myself sane, I spend the entire time planning what happens when we get there.

Pasquale is also on edge because as my consigliere, he is in charge of making sure this shit doesn’t come back to bite us and spends a great deal of time on his phone double checking our plan.

“Run me through it again.”

I regard him through malevolent eyes, and he nods. “Apparently, Senator Billings was into dubious shit that barely made it out of the press. Someone high up kept his name hidden, but he was becoming a problem, getting careless and threatening this organization.”

“Tell me again about that.” I still can’t believe this shit was going on under our noses the entire time, and I’m looking hard for answers to that.

Pasquale says grimly, “One of the whores working the streets told her pimp about her roommate going missing. Apparently, she’d been picked up off the street by the good senator.”

“Sloppy.” I shake my head and Pasquale nods.

“Sonny didn’t want to lose one of his best girls and started asking the wrong people and was found hanging in his apartment by his latest fuck.”

“Any idea who was involved?”

“Luckily, the block manager thought on his feet and before he called the cops, he copied the security footage.”

“Why?”

“Because shit had gone down in his apartment block before, and he set it up as protection and a way of making a few extra bucks.”

He grins, “He made it known that the tape was for sale to the highest bidder, so congratulations, you win.”

He pulls up an image on his phone and I watch as a car parks at the rear of the building and four shadowy figures exit. They are dressed completely in black, their heads obscured by balaclavas.

They head into the building where the camera picks them up in the hallway outside the pimp’s apartment and I observe as they break in, leaving ten minutes later.

“This tells us nothing. I hope you didn’t pay the creep actual dollars.”

I shake my head in disgust and Pasquale smiles secretively. “Watch.”

As the four men leave, a man steps out of nowhere and shouts. His voice is muted, but I can tell he’s angry, probably a tenant who thinks the place is being robbed. A have a go hero if you like and as he tackles one of the four men, he pushes him to the ground and starts raining blows to his head, pulling off the mask and subsequently revealing his face.

Two of the others come to help their accomplice but whoever this guy is, he’s a pro, because he defends himself like an assassin and as he tears into the four men, he rips their balaclavas off to get easier access, while he smashes their faces in.

“Who is this guy?”

I’m impressed and Pasquale laughs. “Jonny Freeman. An ex special forces soldier who was discharged a few months back.”

“Does he need a job?” I fucking hope he does and Pasquale shakes his head. “He has one.”

“Shame.”

“For us.”

I stare at him in surprise, and he waves to the car in front. “Started today and couldn’t wait by all accounts.”
