Then I say roughly, “Go on.”

“Untie me first. Guarantee my safety and then I’ll talk.”

I turn away and continue walking.

“Abel Jackson.”

His pitiful wail reaches out and causes me to sneer. Abel Jackson is the most powerful Judge in town, and I’m not surprised that bent fucker is involved.

I carry on walking.

“Clayton Hass.”

“Fucking banker.” I whisper to Flora, “He heads up City Bank. Now we know where Diana got her information from. Interesting.”

We don’t turn around.

“Carlos Matasso.”

We stop walking.

Flora gasps beside me and almost stumbles and says fearfully, “My father.”

This time I stare at her in shock and growl, “What the fuck, since when?”

“Diana told me when she visited me in the room they kept me in.”

“She was here today?”

I’m incensed and Flora nods miserably. “Earlier. She told me Carlos Matasso was my father after we traded insults. She could have been lying, but what if it’s true?”

Her beautiful eyes gaze at me with so much pain it’s like a physical blow to my heart and I turn and say roughly, “I’m listening.”

The detective shouts, “Untie me and I’ll explain, but you must guarantee my safety.”

“Must I?” I head back to his side, with Flora close behind me.

As I stare into his maddened eyes, I hiss, “Tell me what I need to know, and I’ll untie you.”

He visibly relaxes and says with a deep sigh. “Carlos Matasso is one of the elite five.”

“Elite what?” I can’t believe the shit I’m hearing, and the detective says irritably, “Listen and I’ll tell you. More so you can see how pathetic you are in believing you will ever defeat the Dark Lords.”

He takes a huge gulp of stale air.

“The elite are the men at the pinnacle of the organization. The five pinnacles of the crown. I only know of Carlos because he is the Great Lord of our region.”

I glance at Flora, who is frozen in disbelief, and the detective barks out a laugh. “Mario Bachini thinks he will take that position on the crown one day. All of this...” He points to Flora, “Is to show Carlos he is worthy of a place on the council.”

His eyes flash. “His mission is to take over your business and pledge allegiance to the Matassos. To form a bigger empire that Carlos will ultimately control. Apparently, Diana was the Trojan horse they used to seduce you all and by all accounts, it was easy.”

He laughs at his own fucking joke and then immediately stops when I drive my fist through his fucking stomach. His cries of pain are the sweetest sound and as he coughs and splutters, he hisses, “So you see, this is bigger than all of us and when you stole their money, you wrote your own death warrant.”

I turn to Flora and note the pain and fear casting a shadow across her face and I snarl, “Anything else?”

The detective whispers, “You can’t win. They are too powerful, have too many people in their pockets and the backing of the elite. If I were you, I’d give their money back and prepare for a painful ending because they have no mercy.”

“Thanks for the advice.”
