Elizabeth puts some on her plate, then sits back. Something’s definitely bothering her. She meets my eyes, and I open my mouth to ask, but she gives a little shake of her head, and I close my mouth again.

“So what’s the news with Acheron?” Victoria asks, biting into a dim sum.

“It went well enough,” Titus says. “He was disappointed, but he understood.”

I feel a rush of relief, because Elizabeth was really worried that she’d ruined the project. “Oh, I’m so glad.”

Titus nods, tucking into his lunch. “It was a relief to know he was happy to discuss other options.”

“So what did you decide? Are you going instead?”

“Not sure yet. I’ll probably fly over there and discuss it with him. I don’t particularly want to go for two years, but I will if I have to.”

I glance at Elizabeth. She’s not eating. Mack frowns and gestures with his head toward her. I give a slight shrug.

“You all right?” I ask her. “You look very pale.”

She nods and swallows. “I…” She presses her lips together. Then she puts down her serviette and hurriedly gets to her feet. “I’m so sorry, I think I’m going to be sick.” She turns and rushes from the room, her heels tapping as she runs down the corridor to the Ladies’.

I stare after her, then look at the others.

As one, the other three start to smile. “Holy fuck,” Mack says softly.

My jaw drops, but no words come out.

“Is she late?” Victoria asks me.

“I don’t think so,” I say, my voice husky. “Her period is due tomorrow, I think.”

“Can she get symptoms this early?” Titus asks.

“I don’t know.” Victoria pulls out her phone and Googles it, while I watch her, my head spinning. She reads quickly, then smiles and lowers her phone. “Yeah, apparently some women can feel nauseous a week after conception.”

“It could just be a stomach bug,” I say, my voice a squeak.

Mack chuckles. “Yeah, keep telling yourself that,Daddy.”

“Jesus. I feel dizzy.”

“You’re hyperventilating,” Victoria says, “put your head between your knees.”

At that moment, though, the door opens, and Elizabeth comes back in.

I get to my feet and go around the table to her. “Are you all right?”

She nods, but I can see the excitement in her eyes.

“Do you think…” I begin.

“I don’t know.” She moistens her lips with the tip of her tongue. “I’m not late yet.”

“Victoria looked it up. Some women apparently feel nauseous a week after conception.”

Our gazes lock, and we both start smiling.

“I’m going to buy a test,” she says.

“I’ll come with you.” I turn back to the guys. “You don’t mind?”
