“Watching you eat it does.” I blow out a breath and have my own spoonful.

“Cake’s not the only thing I’ve been looking forward to tasting.” She looks over her shoulder at me mischievously.

“There won’t be any of that,” I reprimand her. “We need every drop of my baby batter to end up where it’s supposed to.”

“Baby batter?”

“Is daddy sauce better? How about erectoplasm?”

She chuckles. “I prefer the band names. Like Pearl Jam.”

“Yeah. And 10cc. They say that’s apocryphal because 10cc is apparently twice the amount a man ejaculates. I don’t agree. I think I could have filled a fifty-gallon whisky barrel by myself ten minutes ago.”

That makes her laugh.

“Actually,” I add, kissing her neck, “my favorite band name for it is The Lovin’ Spoonful.”

“I like that.”

I offer her some more chocolate cake. She opens her mouth, and I deliberately bump the spoon against her nose before sliding it between her lips.

She flicks me a wry look, removes the chocolate from the bridge of her nose with a finger, and licks it off. Taking my forefinger in her hand, she plunges it into the frosting, then deliberately inserts it into her mouth. Slowly, she washes her tongue over it, spending a good thirty seconds sucking it clean.

“Yeah, all right, that backfired,” I say.

She grins, has a mouthful of whisky, then lifts her face for a kiss. My lips curving up, I cover her mouth with mine, and she passes me some of the whisky, warmed by her mouth.

I swallow, put the plate down, and lower my arms into the water. I lift her a little so she’s sitting on my lap, her legs either side of mine. Placing my hands on her knees, I slide my hands up her thighs. Her skin is silky smooth and warm. Careful not to touch between her legs or her breasts, I continue to stroke her, enjoying just touching her.

She sips her whisky and leans back on me, looking out at the night sky. “Did you know that Titus is working on a project to use artificial intelligence in the search for exoplanets?”

“No, I didn’t. What’s an exoplanet?”

“A planet that orbits a star other than our Sun, so one outside our Solar System. It can help study a star’s brightness over time which might tell us whether a planet is transiting in front of it.”

“He’s always been interested in astronomy. It’s cool that he’s able to contribute to its development.” She tips her head to the side to give me better access to her neck as I place kisses on her shoulder.

“By the way,” I add, kissing slowly up to her jaw, “I haven’t forgotten that you set me up with Titus and Mack. That was very naughty.”

“It was in response for throwing me in the pool, if you remember rightly.”

“Even so. I almost had a panic attack in the boardroom.”

She gives a short laugh.

I move her hair aside so I can kiss her ear. “If we hadn’t done this tonight, would you have asked either of them to be a donor for you?”

“I thought about it,” she says softly. “I… I don’t know. I mean, there’s nothing sexual about it. And I wouldn’t expect the guy to be involved at all. But it’s a bit… odd. Isn’t it? Do you think it’s odd? I didn’t really consider that when I asked you. With you it just seemed like the right thing to do because… well, it’s you. But it would be different with them. I don’t know why. I’m not explaining myself very well.”

I run a strand of her hair through my fingers. “Have you ever had feelings for either of them?”

She laughs. “No, never. Mack is far too intense for me. And Titus can be quite moody. I like my men to be meek and mild.” She chuckles.

“Again, not sure about that description. Can’t you use words like impressive or manly?”

“Horny?” she suggests.

“That’s probably nearer to the mark, but I’d prefer something a bit more romantic.” I’m genuinely a bit aggrieved. Is that the best she can come up with?
