“Only thing I had in the car to use for undercover.”

“Thank you for making me feel safe. But just one question. Was I ever in danger, other than from the regular rowdies we deal with here?”

Beau led her to his table and passed the drink he’d ordered for her over. “The waitress said you’d like this.”

“You didn’t answer my question.” She raised the glass to drink from the straw and her face registered her delight.

“I’ll tell you on the way home. Relax, finish your drink, and let me know when you’ve had enough.”

Lori took another huge gulp, lowered the glass, and stood. “I’ll get my stuff from the bar and meet you at the door.” Beau nodded. He watched her every second until they were ensconced in his vehicle, heading to her place.

“Did you visit Jessi?”

“Yeah.” He didn’t explain all the details of why Jessica gave the warning she did, instead he likened it to her having gotten through to the kid. “She cares about you, Lori. Warned me to watch over you.”

“Did they move her?”

“Uh-huh, the Chief said he’d send you a text with the address. They were setting up an undercover detective to take her place in the bed.”

“Good. I’m relieved. I know they had the guards there, but this Ray character is smart. I was worried he’d find a way to get to her.”

“Look, honey. I don’t want you to think about any of that for the rest of the night. You need to sleep.”

“You too. When was the last time you really rested?”

Beau stopped the car in front of her place and turned her way. “You want the truth?”

“I asked, didn’t I?”

“I’ve never slept so well as when we were together. No nightmares to wake me in the middle of the night, no sweats and… ahh, upsetting memories.” He meant to say tears, but shyness curbed the impulse.

“Me too.”

Beau couldn’t stop from asking, “You mean you slept well with me beside you or because of what we did before the lights went out?”

Lori grinned cheekily. “You see, that I’m not really sure of. I think we should do a remake of the night; you know, investigate. And I can let you know my findings in the morning.”

Beau picked up on her sassiness and a lighthearted euphoria filled his whole body. “Me and Mr. Wiggly would be delighted… and I meanreallythrilled… to help you in this experiment.”

Chapter Thirty-seven

Earlier, Lori had looked up and saw the man who’d spent an awful lot of time lodged in her head, making her squirm with need every time she remembered what they’d done together in the dark.

Sitting at the bar, hovering over a drink, his silly hat down low, she wished she could just run into Beau’s arms and never let him go.

Why him being there – protecting her – should mean so much, she couldn’t say, but it did. It meant that she mattered to him and having that knowledge of importance to another person once again lifted her to heaven and back.

Hungry for love, the feeling of knowing you come first to someone else, had festered after she lost her father. Alone in the world had sucked, big time. Looking at Beau, she knew he’d be a feast for any woman, and she wanted more than just that one taste.

Now beside him in the car, she’d known he’d wait for her to make a move… an invitation to continue what they’d started. And she didn’t hesitate. Tonight she needed this man more than she’d ever needed loving arms and lips before.

When they entered her house together, they could barely wait to close the door before they were tearing at clothes and fusing their mouths together as if they’d die if they didn’t taste each other again.

He’d swept her up, balancing her hips so her legs automatically wrapped around his waist, her boots having been kicked off the minute she’d entered through the door. Grinding herself against his hardness, she loved his moans of delighted agreement with her moves.

He kissed her mouth, belying their aggression by the tenderness of his lips. When his tongue delved inside, his hot wildness made her greedy for more. He groaned with delight at her invitation to explore further.

Intending to head to the bedroom, they made it as far as the big chair when she wriggled from his arms.
