Okay, first of all, she’d try and empty out the room next door. Crouching in the bushes under the window, she checked the room and saw all the students huddled in the corner in a group with the teacher in front. They’d barricaded themselves behind desks that wouldn’t hold off the bullets from the AK-15 she’d seen.

Popping up, she made a tapping sound until one of the girls noticed her there and waved. Nodding that she had a plan, she held her finger in front of her mouth for quiet.

Taking her weapon by the muzzle, she tapped the glass in the corner with the gun handle as hard as she could while protecting her face. Though she felt glass cuts on her arm, she continued to break out all the pieces she could get at. Of course, that brought the attention of the other people inside the room, but they were hushed by her new partner.

Sensing freedom, they silently began to pile the chairs to a table to use as steps. When her new friend was the first to form a line of students to break out, Lori whispered, “Hand me more chairs for this side.”

Soon, the teacher seeing the way to freedom, silenced the growing panic that had erupted. She began forcing the terrified students to back off and wait their turn. Ushering them quietly, within seconds they had a steady stream. Assisting the kids down from the window, and onto the outside chairs, Lori signaled her helper to come out, but she shook her head and stayed until the last of her friends had fled to safety.

Both had sharply warned everyone. “Quiet! Go… be safe.”

In the distance, they made out the approaching cops ready to aid in the escape. As soon as the kids saw them, their hands went up to show they were no threat.

Finally, with the classroom of kids out of the building, Lori pressed for her helper to go with the others. “Go on honey. It’s going to be okay.”

Once she stood in front of Lori, she hesitated. I’ll stay and help. I don’t want anyone else to get shot.”

“They won’t, baby. Do as you’re told… now.”

“Uncle Beau. You’re here.”

“Yes. Don’t worry. Everything’s going to be okay now. Go.”

Beau pushed gently at the girl to follow the others and allowed a quick hug between them before she obeyed. He couldn’t believe that Mellie would argue at a time like this. She obviously had a false sense of safety.

“What’s up?” He turned to the injured woman, shallow cuts bleeding from her hands and arms.

“The shooter’s next door.” Lori pointed at the window of the room in question. “I didn’t have a clear shot and the teacher seemed to be having some kind of influence.” She held up the weapon. “Plus, this piece of shit I took from the guard is a fucking toy.”

Beau had to agree. “You did good.”

“I didn’t want to make the shooter nervous and start slaughtering more students.”

“You’re saying there’s wounded in there?”

“Oh, yeah. Can you get a proper rifle?”

They both stiffened when they heard the gunshots start again… pop, pop- pop. Lori ran to where she could see into the room. Sure as hell, she saw the teacher down with some students, cowering against each other.

Strange things enter a mind under stress, and for Lori it was seeing all the cellphones clutched in most hands.

She lifted the gun and pulled the trigger. The first shot broke through the glass and went into the air to get the shooter’s attention. The second she aimed at the widest place on the body.

While this was happening, the man next to her folded his arms over his face, threw himself in through the broken window, and rolled to the floor, ready to attack if her shot went wild. So many things happened at once.

The kid took the bullet in the chest and fell back a few steps while maintaining the clutched rifle. Before he could right himself, his intention obvious, the crazy stuntman was on him, wrestling the weapon from its owner.

Lori hiked herself up through the window, skirt tearing, abrasions on her legs spouting blood, and a few glass cuts appearing on her face. But she got inside in time to grab a heavy book and slam it into the head of the wrestling teen.

Between the two of them the assailant went down, and Lori saw up close the vest that had stopped the ineffective bullet from doing much damage. Then she grabbed the dropped rifle and slung it over her shoulder to keep it safe.

Jesus, if Rambo hadn’t gone into attack mode, the kid could’ve wiped out the lot of them.

Chapter Six

Beau pushed away the body and rolled to the side, his breathing harsh from the adrenalin rush. He’d never moved so fast in his life. Using his bulk as a battering ram through the broken window had taken its toll.
