“Who was that?” I ask, trying to sound casual.

“Oh, nobody important. Just uh something that I’m working on,” he replies.

“Working on?” I ask.

“Yeah, it’s no big deal,” he tells me. “What’s with the questions? Do you think I’m talking to another woman or something?”

“Are you?” I point blank him.

He snickers and pulls me against him and says, “You’re the only girl for me, Clover.”

I want to believe him but I don’t understand why he’s being so secretive. It’s completely out of character for the Dex that I know.

“Are you ready to go? I’m starving,” he says and I nod. He can see the concern in my eyes and says, “Daniela, I told you that it’s nothing to worry about so stop worrying. You’re my girl and I’ll never hurt you.”

We go to Grogan’s for lunch and as we sip our tea and wait for our food I tell myself that I’m just being silly. I’m sure that he’ll eventually tell me what he’s working on and, if not, he shouldn’t be required to share everything with me, should he?

“I’m excited to go home and plant these bushes. Aren’t you?” he asks me.

“I am. We may not have a garden as extravagant as your father’s but it’ll be nice to have one of our own,” I reply.

“Ours will be better because we made it together,” he replies.

We go back to his place and prepare the garden for planting. I never thought that this kind of thing would interest me but I’m enthralled with the idea of creating something beautiful in this overgrown and neglected space.

“I shouldn’t have let it go like this,” Dex tells me. “My mother loved this garden.”

I wipe my soil-covered hand on my pants and place it on his shoulder and say, “We’ll make it beautiful again. I’m sure she’d be proud.”

He leans forward and places his forehead against mine and says, “Thank you, love.”

His phone rings again and he slips it out of his pocket but just far enough to read the screen. He looks at me, winces, and says, “I really have to take this.”

My pulse quickens and I turn and march away toward the house. I’ve had enough of his secrets and I rush to the kitchen to wash my hands so that I can call a taxi to take me back to my room. I can see him out the window. He completes his call and places the phone back in his pocket. He realizes that I’m gone and comes to the house after me. He enters the kitchen to find me leaning against the counter with my arms crossed.

“What are you doing?” he asks me.

“Calling a taxi to take me home,” I reply, fighting back the urge to cry.

He inches closer shaking his head at me, “You’re overreacting to nothing, love.”

“If it’s nothing, why can’t you just tell me who you’re talking to?” I pout.

He huffs and shrugs his shoulders and says, “If you don’t let me have any secrets I can never surprise you,” taking another step in my direction.

“So, what? Are you saying you’re planning a surprise for me?” I ask.

“I am and if you spoil it, I’ll be very disappointed,” he’s standing right on top of me now.

“So, I’m just supposed to believe you and wait for this…surprise?” I ask.

“Yes, because that’s what I’ve told you to do,” he replies.

He takes my breasts in his hands and squeezes causing my pulse to quicken. I want to be upset but his touch and his words awaken something else in me and it’s a battle that I’ll never win. My desire for him will consume me and any doubts or fears that I have about him will wash away like leaves in the storm drain.

He kisses my cheek and neck and whispers, “I love you, Clover.”

I lose my breath when I hear those words for the first time and I begin to cry. He wipes the tears from my face and I laugh and cry at the same time.
