There was so much I didn’t know. I should start asking questions and learning things. But not today. Today is my birthday. And he was being so nice to me. I’d never experienced anything like this before. Why would I ruin something that makes me happy?

I took my clothes off and plunged myself into the foam.

Okay, maybe just one small question,I thought, playing with bubbles.Something romantic. About this mate thing. Is it real? If it is, how does that work? And what if he—

I pulled my head under the water, hoping it would stop questions from multiplying.

FINN

She’s much tougher than me. It was a thank-you kiss. On a cheek. And it raised my pulse to a million. I imagined if she kissed me fully on—Oh, shut up.

I was downstairs now and was walking into my study where Clare had been sitting since 2 a.m.

With the full moon so close, she was on the verge of despair. Yesterday, when Spencer was in the shower, I told her about the research I'd been doing the last few weeks while waiting for their arrival, and she was eager to read everything I’d found about hybrids.

“Some of this I've read before, some is new.” Clare tore her red, tired eyes off the computer screen and looked up at me. “But so far, none of this has any information on how to save her.”

“No. But it says why they can’t make it through. The main reason is not the lack of strength, but the opposite. The force of power is too strong. When the men shift, their wolf part, which is always stronger than the magic part, overcomes the witch and takes over. But as history tells us, the women could be both because, unlike men, their powers were equally strong and they didn’t fight, but complemented each other. And that’s the reason they were cursed. The curse was created to reverse the process. To make two powers fight each other to the host's death. Imagine the force. Like I said, it became too strong, too much for the body to handle. I think that's where we should look for a loophole.”

“You mean if we remove one of those powers—”

“We can’t do that. It’s in our genes.”

“But then—”

I raised my hand, stopping her.

“Clare, you’re exhausted, and you need to rest. We'll look into it, but right now . . . it’s Spencer’s birthday. I promised her a nice breakfast and she’ll come downstairs soon. After we eat, I’ll take her for a walk to show her around, and I want you to promise me you’ll get some sleep.”

“I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not. You said you want to celebrate in town, in a nice restaurant, and I don’t want you to fall asleep at the table after the first glass of champagne. Let’s go.”

“Okay,” she pulled herself up. “At least let me help you. How about I make some smoothies?”

“My blender is your blender.” I pointed my hand at the door.

She chuckled and headed to the kitchen.

ChapterTwelve

SPENCER

After breakfast, when Finn offered to go for a walk, Mom said she had a hard time falling asleep last night, and that it would be better for her to stay home and take a nap.

“First, let me show you the rest of the house.”

Finn led me to the niche next to the fireplace, where we came upon double doors with stained glass.

“This is my study,” Finn said, opening the doors. “And also a library.”

This room looked completely opposite to the rest of the house.

The middle of the room was a big open space with a leather couch, an armchair, and a small wooden table in between them covered with several closed and open books.

On one side of the room, next to the window, stood an antique mahogany desk. I stopped my eyes on the vibrant colors of the stained-glass lamp shade sitting on top of a bronze base that looked like a curved branch.
