I turned to Kade. "What do you think? Your father died during the robbery. It's as much your call as it is mine."

Kade didn't answer right away. Finally, he said. "We'll send the jewels back to Holden anonymously. Then this will be over. My father's murderer is dead. Rachel did some good trying to tear apart Max Davino's criminal enterprise. I don't think anyone has to run again."

I let out a breath at his words. He was being far more generous than I'd expected. "That works for me," I said. "But Inspector Greenman might dig deeper into your lives. He's very curious about why Mom ran away twenty years ago. Can the police officer from New Orleans, the one who helped set you up with new lives, talk to the inspector about how you helped take down the mob? Seems like that should get you off the hook for the fake identities."

"Possibly," Rachel said. "I haven't been in contact with him in sixteen years, but I can tell Inspector Greenman about that part."

"Then that's what you should do." I blew out a breath. "I want you both to be free. I really do."

"Thank you, Brynn," my mom said. "But there's still Dani to consider. She may want something different."

"Dani will be happy to let all this go. She won't want to drag our family skeletons through a public spotlight." I took a breath. "And I don't think anyone needs to know that Max is our biological father."

"They don't need to know I'm your biological mother, either," Rachel said.

I thought about that. "It's so strange. You're my mother, but you feel like my aunt." I turned to Laura. "And you're my aunt, but you feel like my mother."

"Maybe we can just be two people who love you," my mom said.

"Maybe. I guess we'll see."

When Kade and I stepped into the hallway, Inspector Greenman was waiting. "Thanks for giving me the time alone with them," I said.

"Are they ready to talk?"

"Yes. They're going to tell you everything."

"I may follow up with you to make sure what they tell me is the truth," he said.

I nodded. "That's fine. Did the man you arrested at the church have information to share?"

"Yes. He said Max Davino shot your mother. He drove him to and from the scene."

I nodded. "Max admitted that when we were in the church. What about the man who kidnapped me? What will happen to him?"

"He'll be charged with a number of crimes. We were also able to trace his transaction to Max Davino. Since Mr. Davino is deceased, we should be able to wrap up this case quickly. We know who did what, but I'm not as clear on the motivation, which is what I want to find out today."

"My mother and my aunt are waiting to speak to you."

He gave me a small smile. "I have a feeling that's going to be quite a story. I'm glad you're all right, Ms. Landry."

"Me, too."

As Inspector Greenman went into the room, Kade and I walked down the hall to the waiting room. Dani and Steve got up when they saw us. I could see the strain and guilt in Dani's eyes.

"I'm sorry," Dani said. "I just couldn't listen to them anymore, Brynn. Maybe another time when I'm less tired."

"I completely understand. It's a lot to take in."

"Steve and I are going to drive back to Carmel from here," Dani said. "I'd love for you to follow us, but I know that you still have your things at the house. I can't go back there. I can't stand being in her home for one more minute. But we can wait in the car outside while you get your bag."

"It's fine. You and Steve should leave from here. I have some loose ends to tie up."

Steve cleared his throat. "Kade, do you want to walk downstairs with me? We can get the cars, give the women a minute."

"Sure," Kade said, as they left the waiting room.
