"He wouldn't have shot her," Dani said. "My God, Brynn. How could you suggest that?"

"I didn't say that. But it's weird that he's not calling any of us back. We need to talk to him, Dani."

Dani took out her phone. "I'll call him again."

"What are you going to say?"

"I don't know. Let's find out." She put the phone on speaker. It rang four times and then went to voicemail. Dani frowned, then said, "Dad, it's Dani. Call me back. It's urgent. Something is terribly wrong. Brynn and I need to talk to you."

As she ended the call, our gazes met once more, and it felt like we were sharing the same thoughts, the way we had done so many times in our lives.

"Just because he's not calling us back doesn't mean he's guilty of anything," Dani said.

"I don't want him to be guilty of anything. I want all of this to be a mistake, but it's not."

"I need to see her, Brynn."

"I know. But are you sure you can handle it? I don’t want the stress to hurt you or the baby."

"I can handle it. I've always taken care of you, haven't I?"

"You have." Dani had always been the strong one, and I was relieved to see that strength now. I needed it to flow into me. "It will be a lot easier to get through this with you at my side."

"Then let's go to the hospital and see this woman. After that, we'll drive back to Carmel."

I stared at her in amazement. "We can't just see her and leave."

"What are we going to do here?" Dani challenged.

"Find out the truth. I know you think the truth might hurt, but I'm already hurting. I have to know what happened."

"It was twenty years ago, and if she dies without waking up, her secrets will die with her."

I met Dani's hard gaze. "Maybe that's why someone shot her, to protect their secrets."

"If they did, then the last thing we should do is try to find out those secrets."

"Dani—"

She put up a hand. "Let's talk about it later. I can't decide until I look at her face."

CHAPTEREIGHT

We arrivedat the hospital just before noon. There were several people gathered around the nurses' station including Inspector Greenman and a couple of security guards.

"Something is wrong," I told Dani.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

I didn't have time to answer. Inspector Greenman broke away from a conversation he was having with a security guard and walked over to us.

"Ms. Landry. I was just going to call you." As his gaze moved from me to Dani, his eyes widened. "Wait a second. There are two of you? Who did I talk to last night?"

"That was me," I said. "This is my sister, Dani. What's going on? Why are you here? Is my mom all right?"

"Someone attacked your mother about an hour ago."

"What?" I asked in shock. "How could that happen?"
