“So you weren’t trying to get a tattoo?”

“No,” Waverly assured me.

“Wouldn’t have worked anyway. You have to be eighteen,” Jessica said without looking up. “I already asked.”

“So,you’rethe reason why the three of you are here?” I asked.

“No,” Waverly said. “I’m the reason why we’re here. I swear I wasn’t trying to do anything sketchy.”

“Ha, get it? Sketchy? Tattoo parlor?” Jessica said with a grin, causing both girls to crack up. She stood up. “Come on, Dylan. I’ll drop you off at home.”

“Bye, Willa,” Dylan said with a wave.

“Bye.” I turned to my sister and plunked my hands on my hips.

Waverly nodded. “Are you—are we going home?”

“No. I haven’t had a chance to try the cake Brooklyn made for the engagement brunch yet. I came to get you, and then I’m going back.”

“Are you going to yell at me in front of everyone?”

“No, I won’t yell at you in front of everyone. But they were all there when Roman called Brielle, so they all know what you’re up to.”

With a sigh, Waverly grabbed her bag and headed out into the parking lot.

Brielle’s eldest brother strode out from the back. Roman was tall with brown hair, wearing an army green T-shirt that showed off his heavily inked arms. “Hey, sorry to drag you away from the engagement brunch. Just thought you’d want to know what your sister and her friends are up to.”

“Yeah, they’re making a habit of going places they shouldn’t,” I said with a sigh. “Thanks for letting us know.”

“For the record, she didn’t try to get inked. Her friend on the other hand…”

“Jessica used to be so sweet. Now she’s becoming a rebel?” I shook my head.

“And that guy…is he your sister’s boyfriend?”

“Yep. What was she here for if she wasn’t trying to get a tattoo?”

“Not sure,” he admitted. “They were looking around. When I got done with my last customer I came to walk him out, and there they were.”

“There they were.”

He shook his head. “Is it me, or do kids start looking younger and younger as you get older?”

“I wouldn’t know yet. Maybeyou’rejust getting older and older,” I pointed out. I leaned forward and kissed his cheek. “Thanks for looking out for my sister. I appreciate it.”

“It takes a village.” He shrugged. “And I’m no stranger to teenage theatrics and antics of a teenage girl. I’m pretty sure my mother had to dye her gray hair because of Brielle.”

I rolled my eyes. “Something to look forward to.”

Chapter23

“Take two pieces,”Brooklyn said, handing me the aluminum to-go tin. “Then you guys can get out of here.”

Waverly was talking with Brielle and Jazz. About what, I had no idea.

“Is it that obvious?” I asked.

“You’re killing my buzz,” Doc teased.
