“Mine.”

“Yours? How did you buy them?”

“With money…”

“Where did you get the money?” I pinned.

“Dylan’s uncle. He’s what you’d call acash investor. We’ve already paid him back. That’s how well we’re doing.”

“Jesus, if not for the secrecy, I’d be fucking impressed. Scratch that, Iamimpressed. But you can’t keep coming to this part of town. It’s not safe.”

She sighed. “Yeah, I knew when you found out about the workshop, you’d put a stop to it.”

“Not a stop. We’ll find you another space, I swear. This is…wow, I’m really blown away.”

“Can I show you my favorite piece?” she asked.

“Sure.”

She led me to the back corner of the workshop to a large solid wooden desk that had been painted dark green with a semi-gloss clear finish; the ornate drawer handles sprayed gold against the stunning green.

“This is gorgeous,” I admitted. “You’ll sell this one right away, I’m sure.”

“No, I won’t. Because it’s yours.”

“Mine?” I asked in confusion. “I don’t get it.”

“I refinished it for you. So when you finally get your dual monitor, you have enough space to use it.”

“You did this…for me?” I asked, emotion coating my throat.

“Well, yeah.” She smiled. “You’ve done so much for me. I wanted to return the favor. And this’ll help you run your business.”

I grabbed hold of my sister and dragged her into an embrace. “Jesus, kid. You know how to shock the hell out of me.”

She laughed and hastily pulled away, but only so she could swipe at the tears gathering in her eyes.

“It’s perfect,” I said. “And I’m completely in love with it.”

“Thought you would be.”

“I swear we’ll find you another space to work out of, okay?” I said. “I’m really proud of you.”

“Ditto, sis. Ditto.”

“Just one question. Why tape the money to the back of the toilet?” I asked.

“I learned from the best, didn’t I?” she smirked. “I knew you wouldn’t be like Mom and take it, but I wasn’t ready to answer questions about it either. The sock drawer was out because we share a sock drawer.”

“You’ve got the making of a criminal mastermind.”

“I know, right?”

Chapter30

I strode into O’Reilly’s,greeting the bartender as I surveyed the entirety of the room.

An attractive, dark-haired man in his thirties, dressed in a black suit sat in my usual booth. I immediately approached him, a friendly smile on my face.
