“What did he say?”

“He’s taking the case,” I said. “But he laid out some ideas that I’ve been mulling over.”

“What kind of ideas?”

I offered him my beer. He came over and took it.

“He said the courts need to see stability. Financial stability, as well as a stable home life.”

“Okay,” he said, brow furrowing in confusion. “You’ve basically been raising Waverly this entire time anyway.”

“True. However, the courts are going to give me a hard time because I’m newly self-employed, and the easiest way to prove I have the means of taking care of Waverly is to get married.”

“Wait, likemarried, married?”

I swiped the beer and took another drink. “Yep. Married.”

Savage burst out laughing.

“What’s so funny?” I demanded.

“You just got to the point where you didn’t break out in hives admitting you were in a relationship. Now you’ve got to get married. Have you had a panic attack about any of this yet?”

“You’re fucking hilarious, you know that?” I growled. “Like full on fucking hilarious.”

“You’re not going to do something stupid, are you?”

“Is that a rhetorical question?”

“I mean, youaregoing to ask him to marry you. He’ll say yes, you know.”

“I know,” I said softly. “I just…damn it.”

“What?”

“He’s waited so long for me,” I said. “And now this moment—this thing that I need—isn’t aboutus. It’s about my sister.”

“You love him.”

“Yes,” I admitted. “Of course, I love him. Ilovehim. And it’s not fair. It’s not fair that he hasn’t gotten to have anything normal.”

“Neither have you,” he pointed out. “Neither have I. Neither has Waverly. It’s why you’re going to ask Duke to marry you, so you can be sure that Waverly has something none of us had. A true family. A true home, even if it’s just a few years until she flies the nest.”

“Don’t tell him,” I said. “I want to be the one. Please?”

He nodded. “Okay.”

“Savage, I mean it.”

“Heard you loud and clear. You’ll tell Duke when you’re ready, which I’m guessing will be as soon as possible.”

“The sooner the better,” I agreed. I rubbed my forehead. “I need to shower off this day.”

“Day isn’t over,” he pointed out.

“It is for me. Jess is driving Waverly home and I’m contemplating eating an early dinner of ice cream and hot fudge.”

“Most women would be happy to get married to their boyfriend that they love.”
