“So how are you going to propose to him?”

“No idea,” I said. “Got any ideas?”

“I’m inclined to say something to do with moonshine.”

I raised my brows. “How do you know about moonshine?”

“Not because I’ve tasted it.”

“Uh huh.”

“Okay, I’ve tasted it,” she admitted. “But it singed my nose hairs and I vowed never to touch the stuff ever again.”

“It’s okay, Waverly. I was fifteen once.”

“Yeah, like, a garillion years ago. And I’ll be fifteen-and-a-half in a few months.”

“Oh, we’re adding a half now to your age? You’re definitely getting old,” I teased.

“Can I have a party? For my sixteenth birthday?”

“You want a party?” I asked in surprise.

“Lessparty, more of a cake-made-by-Brooklyn. Uncle Bill said I could have the gathering at Boots.”

“That’s nice of him.”

“Yeah.” She nodded. “Can I invite some people from the WID?”

“What the hell is the WID?”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah, seriously. I’m lost.”

“WID stands for Wrought Iron District. It’s where my workshop is. That’s what they used to make in that area way back in the dinosaur days of the 40s.”

“You actually know people from the area?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay,” I said in bemusement. “It’s kind of official. You’re cooler than I am.”

“Now that,” she plucked my fork from my hand, “is a fact.”

“I’ve got a fresh pot of coffee brewing for you, I took your favorite red lipstick from your purse, and Jessica is giving me a ride this morning,” Waverly said as she stood over my bed.

I peered up at her through the crack of my lids. “Huh?”

A horn honked. “Gotta go. That’s Jess.”

I sat up and rubbed my face. The front door closed and my sluggish brain finally put together what she said. “She took my favorite lipstick!”

By the time I got up and scrambled to the front door and wrenched it open, Jess’s car was peeling down the street.

I didn’t have a phone to text yell at her, so I had to settle for a grumble. With a yawn, I ambled my way into the bathroom. I stood under the hot water, hoping that would help me wake up, but I had a long day ahead of me and I couldn’t do it without sugar and caffeine. I was prepared to caffeinate myself to high heaven by driving to Pie in the Sky and ordering a Witch’s Brew if need be.

I got out of the shower and threw my wet hair up into a knot. As I poured a cup of coffee, there was a knock on the front door.
