I’m trapped.

My heart began to pound, and I started to sweat in panic. I arched forward and leaned over while also bringing my knees up toward my chest to try and get my hands near my face. Everything was a struggle because of how I was tied up. My hamstrings screamed in pain as I attempted to grasp the edges of the bag with my fingers. I fumbled for a moment, but I was finally able to bend my head down far enough and pinch the end of the fabric, and I gripped it tightly and wrestled the hood off.

It was still pitch black and I couldn’t see, but the air outside the veil was immediately cooler and I took a few deep breaths. My throat was dry and I swallowed several times. I licked my lips, grateful that my mouth hadn’t been taped.

“Is—” I cleared my throat “—anyone else here?”

I heard the rustling of what sounded like denim followed by a whimper.

“My name’s Willa,” I said. “Who’s there?”

“Sailor,” came a raspy reply. After a moment she said, “I peed myself. I couldn’t hold it anymore.”

I had no idea how old she was, but from the sound of her voice I guessed she was younger than me. Without light, I had to rely on sound and touch.

Bile churned in my belly as I realized how dire our situation was. Flashes of my abduction came to the forefront of my mind, and I immediately tried to stifle the images.

“How old are you, Sailor?”

“Sixteen. How old are you?”

“Twenty-four.”

“Do you—do you know where they’re taking us?” she asked, her voice trembling.

“No.” I had no idea, but I’d been plucked right off the streets in broad daylight. I might not know where we were being taken, but I had a pretty good idea ofwhywe’d been taken. “Sailor, is there anyone else in here with us? Do you know?”

“There’s someone else. A leg is touching mine, but the person’s not awake. I can hear breathing, though,” Sailor said. “I think it’s another girl, but I don’t know for sure.”

“Good. That’s good.”

“That’sgood? That there’s someone in here with us?”

Her voice was rising in fear, and the last thing I needed was for her to have an anxiety attack. If I had to calm her down, then I wouldn’t be able to focus on figuring out where we were and how to get out.

“It’s good that she’s breathing,” I clarified. “Okay, Sailor. I need your help.”

“My help? With what?”

“With getting out of here.”

“We don’t even know where we are, how are we going to—”

“Be quiet for a second,” I hissed.

She immediately shut up. I listened intently for a moment. I heard the distinct rumble of road noise, but it was muted. We went over a bump, and it jostled me into Sailor.

“Sorry,” I said as I righted myself.

“It’s fine,” she assured me.

“Well, we’re in a truck or a cargo van, that much I know.”

“Why isn’t the other girl awake yet?” she asked, her voice shaky and filled with trepidation.

“Don’t worry about that right now. She’s breathing, so she’s going to be okay.” I leaned away from Sailor to press against the wall. There was no give to it. Even if I was able to maneuver my body around in the tight space, I doubted I’d be able to kick a hole into it. And even if could, then what?

As scary as it had been being kidnapped off the streets, I knew it was going to be far worse once we stopped and were unloaded.
