She let out an exhale and nodded. “Aye.”

“Zip?”

“Aye,” the VP of the Blue Angels replied.

Round the table we went. When it was Doc’s turn to vote, she didn’t say anything for a long moment. She was staring at Rachel, and Rachel was staring at her.

“Doc?” Boxer pressed.

“Nay,” Doc murmured. She cleared her throat and said again, louder. “I vote nay.”

“What the fuck, Linden?” Boxer lashed. “We talked about this. You were going to vote yes. Prez, she votes aye.”

“Doc?” Colt pressed.

“I vote nay.” She straightened her spine and met Boxer’s gaze. “Nay, Boxer.”

“You? Of all the people at this table, you know what these people can—”

“Yes,” she agreed. “I know.” She reached out and cradled his jaw with her scarred hand. “Iknow. I know more than anyone what war with the cartel will mean.”

They stared at one another so intensely, it was as if they were entirely alone. They had a silent conversation with their eyes, until finally Boxer nodded. He turned his head ever so slightly and kissed her palm. “Doc votes nay.”

The ayes swept the rest of the table; even Rachel voted aye.

Doc was the only one against.

“The aye’s have it,” Colt said, his expression grim. “We go to war.”

The brothers beat and smacked the table.

Colt went on, “I’ll speak with Mateo Sanchez, but we also need more Blue Angels. The Coeur d’Alene boys don’t have enough men to spare.”

Zip rubbed his jaw. “Spearfish has some brothers. Viper’s getting out of the joint in a few weeks. He’s probably itching for a fight.”

“He’s been locked up in the pen for five years.” Gray said. “He’s been doing nothingbutfighting.”

“Spearfish?” I whispered to Duke.

“South Dakota,” he clarified. “There used to be a big chapter there, but it fell apart when their president died a while back. There’s a few brothers still there, but they’re lost right now. Kind of like Nomads—like Slash.”

I nodded.

“Yeah, I’ll make a call,” Colt said. “Four or five extra guys would definitely help. And as the brothers and I have discussed recently, we’ve decided to patch in Crow and South Paw, effective immediately. We’ll need new prospects.” He banged the gavel and rose from the table. He took Scarlett from Mia and cradled her in his big arms.

“You want to tell me what you need to tell me?” Duke asked me.

I nodded and gestured to the door. We headed outside and I walked to the edge of the fence, far enough away so that we couldn’t be overheard.

“Sailor might as well be alone in this world, for all her dad cares about her,” I said.

“Yeah.” He nodded. “He sounds like a real piece of shit.”

“Pretty much. I told her she could stay with us, as long as she needed. Just kind of a safe place, you know? I know we don’t have a lot of space right now in Mia’s rental, but it doesn’t matter, Duke. She needs people. She reminds me so much of—”

He placed a finger against my lips. “You don’t have to convince me of anything. I’m good with it.”

I kissed his finger and then grasped it in my hand. “You are?”
