He fell quiet and I lifted myself up on my elbow to stare at him. “Unless there’s something you know that I don’t?”

Duke grinned. “Nah. Just hoping, I guess.”

“Wish it into existence, hmm?”

“Wishing has nothing to do with it. I gave you enough seed to make an army.”

“Charming,” I muttered with a laugh as I sat up. “I’m hungry.”

“Me too.” His finger brushed my nipple.

I batted his hand away. “Feed me before I faint.”

We got out of bed and Duke slid on a pair of flannel pants but left his chest bare. The cabin was overly warm due to the combination of our aerobic exercises and the roaring woodstove.

I threw on Duke’s shirt and padded to the kitchen after him.

“Snow’s still coming down,” he said as he opened the fridge.

“Hard too, from the looks of it. Good thing we got your bike into the trailer.” I wrapped my arms around him and laid my cheek against his body. “I almost wish we didn’t have to leave.”

“You don’t want to go back?” He turned, forcing me to release him. I stepped away and then hopped up on the counter.

I shrugged. “I mean, yeah, I miss my sister and Savage. But this has been a nice reprieve. Where it’s just us, there’s no one else to worry about or think about. It’s just you and me and…whatwewant.”

Duke turned back to the fridge and pulled out a glass container. “Leftover stew?”

“Sounds good.” I made a move to jump down, but he stopped me.

“I’ll get bowls.” He trekked around the kitchen while I looked on. “You didn’t ask what Prez called about.”

“Was I supposed to? It’s club business, right?”

“Sort of. Not anything you can’t be privy to though.” He parceled out the stew into two bowls and put one into the microwave. “You know the land behind the clubhouse?”

“Yeah.”

“The club bought it. Deal went through.”

“That’s cool.”

“Yeah. Prez has been wanting to expand for a while. Club’s growing and we need the space.”

“Sure, makes sense.”

The microwave beeped and Duke opened the door and touched the bowl. “Not too hot,” he said as he stuck a spoon in it and handed it to me.

“Thanks.” I held the dish in my hands. “Is that all? I mean, for the news about the club?”

Duke shook his head. “The clubhouse is gonna go through some changes.”

“Changes? What kind of changes?”

He rubbed his stubbly jaw and said, “It’s going to start looking more like a compound over time. We’re beefing up security.”

“Are we talking armed guards here?” I asked.

“At some point, yeah.”
