His words sliced into me, and I suddenly remembered where we were. “This isn’t the place for this conversation.”

“There’s nothing more to talk about, Willa. You either want to be with me publicly, or you don’t.”

“Hey, Willa,” Crow greeted as he approached us. “Sorry to interrupt.”

I turned to the Blue Angels prospect and forced a smile. “It’s fine. Hi, Crow.”

“Someone named Jessica is outside. Says she’s friends with your sister.”

I frowned. “She is friends with my sister. Best friends. And Waverly is supposed to be at Jessica’s house right now.”

I looked over my shoulder at Duke and he nodded as I headed out of the bar.

My sister’s best friend was a cute, petite sixteen-year-old blonde, who at the moment looked like she could pass for twenty. Her hair was curled and teased, her lips were seductively red, and her low-rise jeans showed a hint of her pink thong. Her bared midriff revealed a pierced navel.

“Jessica?”

She flung herself into my arms. “Thank God, I found you!”

“What’s going on?” I demanded. “Where’s Waverly?”

Jessica pulled back and grimaced. “That’s what I have to tell you—and you’re not gonna like it...”

Chapter2

Jessica lookedover my shoulder and stared at Duke.

“You can trust him. He’s my best friend,” I assured her.

“Wow,” she murmured and then she realized what she had said aloud. The glow from the bar’s outdoor lights illuminated the color suffusing her cheeks.

“Focus, Jessica,” I said with a wry snort.

“So, we kind of went to a party,” she said and then paused.

“And?” I went on.

“A party at a warehouse. There was a light show and music and…”

“Drugs?” Duke supplied, his voice harsh.

“Yeah, drugs.” Jessica winced. “We didn’t take anything, I swear. But we were dancing and the cops showed up. Everyone scattered like roaches, only Waverly and I got separated. She’s with Dylan, though.”

She unzipped her leather belt bag and pulled out a cellphone and handed it to me. “Her phone. She asked me to hold it for her.”

“So, my sister is out there with some strange kid named Dylan who she met at a rave, and you have her phone and she hasn’t called us?” I asked, my ire rising to the surface.

“Not some strange kid,” Jessica said. “Dylan.”

“Is that supposed to mean something to me?” I snapped.

“Dylan’s her boyfriend.”

“Boyfriend? Waverly doesn’t have a boyfriend,” I scoffed.

“Oh, she has a boyfriend,” Jessica insisted. “And they’re together right now. I called his phone, but it went to voicemail.”

“And he hasn’t checked in with you?” I demanded. “I do not like this. I do not like this at all.”
