“Not much, actually. Just kind of killing time until I pick up Waverly from school.”

My phone chimed again. Duke’s name flashed across the screen. My cheeks instantly heated when I remembered his text from this morning.

I was both relieved and disappointed when his text merely said:

Duke

Buy you lunch.

Me

You treated last time.

Duke

Willa, I don’t give two shits about lunch. I’m trying to get you in the same room with me so I can kiss your—

My phone rang, and it startled me enough that I dropped it onto the wooden island.

“Crap,” I muttered. I picked up my phone and answered it. “Hello?”

“Ms. Gravestone,” a masculine voice said.

“Yes, this is she,” I replied.

“I’ll be right there.” I hung up and clutched my phone in my fist.

“Willa?” Brooklyn voiced.

I turned and said simply, “I have to go.”

I parkedin the school parking lot and cut the engine. I grabbed my purse from the passenger seat and then climbed out of my car, slamming the door, and marching into the school. Classes were in session so the hallways were silent, except for the clack of my heels on the cement floor.

“May I help you?” she asked politely.

“I’m Willa Gravestone. My sister, Waverly—”
