“So, you’re scared of digging deeper because you’re worried about a future that hasn’t played out?”

“Well, when you put it that way…”

I took a sip of my coffee and reached for the muffin.

“There’s an Italian restaurant on the other side of town. A hole in the wall place. The husband cooks and the wife serves and they yell at each other in Italian.”

“Ah, that’s how you know it’s authentic,” I said with a laugh.

“Exactly. You have plans Wednesday night?”

“Hanging with my sister,” I said. “I’ve got to keep a close eye on her right now. Who knows what she’s liable to do, acting out her teenage rebellion in response to Angel ditching us. She’s handling it well, but it’s a lot to digest at that age.”

He smiled slightly. “Okay.” He let go of my foot and then stood up.

“Where are you going?” I asked.

“I got shit to do. Even though I’d rather stick around and see what fun we could get up to here, I think it’ll keep.”

“It’ll keep,” I repeated. “Duke?”

“Hmm?”

“We have the apartment to ourselves and you didn’t try anything.”

He leaned over and cradled the back of my head in his large hand, tilting my face up to meet his gaze. “I don’t like how you’re playing this, Willa.”

“Playing? I’m not playing anything!”

“Good.” He kissed me briefly and then let me go. “I’ll call you later.”

He strode to the door and left.

I stared after him, confused as hell.

Chapter13

“I love working!”Waverly announced as she blew through the front door.

I closed my laptop and looked at her. “Yeah? You enjoyed yourself at Charlie’s?”

“It was so cool,” she exclaimed, shutting the door and locking it.

“Far be it from me to think spreadsheets and numbers are cool, but everyone’s got a passion. Did Duke give you a ride?”

“No. Torque did.”

“Torque? Seriously? On his bike?”

Waverly marched over to the fridge and pulled it open. “Not on his bike. He had the SUV because he had to go pick up Allison and baby Tank. Said it was no trouble. Torque’s a cool dude.”

“Torque is cool? The guy doesn’t even talk.”

“He talks.”

“You know this how?”

“Because he let me help him rebuild an engine. I hardly spent any time in the office looking at spreadsheets.”
