“Yeah, because if you say no, I’ll just go behind your back and do it anyway. And then I’d be lying to you and then you’d find out and we’d get into a big fight. Let’s just skip all that and get to the good part of you saying yes.”

“Okay,” I said, laughing. “You’ve worn me down.”

“Yay! So I can text Dylan that I’ll be taking the class?”

“Yeah, you can text him. Do I need to drive you?”

“No. He’ll drive me.”

“Straight there and back. No detours,” I commanded.

“Yes, Warden. I got it.”

“When’s the class start?” I asked.

She pulled out her cell phone from her bag. “Tomorrow night is the first class. It’s an hour and a half each class, four total days, every Wednesday for a month. I need six hours of training.”

“So, for the next four Wednesday nights you’ll be doing the course.”

“Yep.”

“Okay.” I nodded. “Go for it. You have my full support.”

“Thanks.” She grinned and then buried herself in her phone.

As we pulled up to the house, her phone beeped. “Cool. Dylan’s gonna swing by and get me at six thirty. The class starts at seven and ends at eight thirty. So I’ll be home at a eleven.”

“Eleven,” I repeated. “Wait,what?”

She giggled. “Just kidding. I’ll be home at nine. Or nine-ish depending on the traffic.”

“Pure trouble, you are.”

“Absolutely. But you love me for it.”

“I need to make a call real fast,” I said to her. “Why don’t you head into the house.”

“You can’t do it inside?” she asked as she grabbed the plastic bag and her purse.

“Client thing,” I lied. “I won’t be long.”

“Okay.” She climbed out of the car and shut the door. I didn’t pull out my phone until she was in the house.

I pressed dial and he answered on the first ring.

“Willa.”

The way he said my name had my breath hitching and my belly fluttering.

“This Italian place you mentioned,” I began. “Do you need a reservation?”

I checked my makeup one last time in the rearview mirror, ensuring that my red lipstick was perfect. My eyes were smokey and I was wearing a pair of jeans from Joni that felt like they’d been custom made for me.

It was strange, wearing clothes that belonged to someone else, but like anything, I put my own spin on it. I’d paired the jeans with a loose weave ruby red sweater that hung off the shoulders. Underneath was a silky white cami.

I hesitated to call this a date. We were meeting in secret, he hadn’t picked me up at my house, and I wasn’t able to dedicate the entire night to him.

A thrill went through me all the same. I wasn’t sure if it was because what we were doing felt illicit, or if it was because this was a new adventure for us.
