Savage was clearly done with the conversation and left without saying a word, leaving me alone with Duke.

“I thought your head was going to explode out there,” I said, gesturing with my chin toward Joker.

“You handled it,” he said. “In a very Old Lady type of way.”

“He has such a punchable face.”

Duke rubbed his jaw and cracked a grin. “I would’ve paid good money to see that.”

“It would’ve caused more problems than it was worth.”

“You know how we resolve this? So it doesn’t happen again?” Duke asked.

“I have a feeling I know what you’re going to say,” I drawled. “Now is not the time or place to talk about it. People are watching us.”

“You never want to talk about it,” he pointed out. “And it’s starting to piss me off.”

“I’m yours, Duke. In all the ways that really matter.”

“Then why won’t you take this public? I think you’re running out of good reasons to keep our relationship under wraps. What are you scared of?”

I took a deep breath. “We can explore that more on our date. Don’t bail on dinner with me. Please?”

“Dinner,” he repeated. He stared at me and sighed. “Wednesday? Same place?”

“Different place. I want to sit in a booth.”

He grinned. “Mama Leonardi will be mad if you don’t come back.”

“I’ll come back. But…”

“But what?”

“I don’t want us to fall into some boring routine just because we already know everything about each other. You know?”

“What makes you think you know everything about me?”

I raised my brows. “Don’t I?”

“The important shit, yeah.”

“What don’t I know?” I demanded.

He took a step closer. “You don’t know about some of my morally corrupt sexual fantasies that I have involving you.”

A smile bloomed across my face. “Well, well, well. Guess you can still surprise me, after all these years.”

Chapter19

“Doyou think Savage is going to call again like he did last time we were on a date?” I asked Duke as we slid into the same side of the booth at La Creperie.

“Doubtful,” Duke said with a rueful chuckle.

I snorted. “Was he with a woman when you left?”

“Yep.”

“Good, maybe she can keep him occupied.”
