I gritted my teeth. “It’s your fault this is taking as long as it is.”

“I own my part in this,” he said, just as he added another finger. Then his thumb pressed against the bundle of nerves between my thighs.

I bit my lip to stop my moan as I spasmed around him.

“Another round for you both?” the server asked, startling me.

I was in no shape to say anything.

Duke raised an eyebrow at me and then turned his head to glance at the server, all the while still blocking my body from sight.

“Yeah, that’d be great, thanks for keeping an eye on us.” Duke smiled.

“My pleasure.” The server beamed before sailing away.

“You’re evil,” I hissed at him.

Duke slowly removed his fingers from my body and then tugged down my skirt. Then he stuck those two fingers into his mouth, his dark eyes glistening with need.

“And you taste perfect.”

“Who would’ve thought snails would be so damn delicious?” I asked as I dunked a piece of French bread into the remaining butter and garlic.

“Who would’ve thought I still want to kiss you despite the garlic?” Duke teased.

I chuckled. “Admit it. They were good.”

“They were. Not as good as thecassouletthough. What can I say? French beanie weanies speak to my foster-kid heart.”

Duke rarely talked about his time in the system. While growing up, he’d done everything possible to avoid going home. His foster parents didn’t even care where he was. So he spent most of his time with me and Savage, hanging at whatever place I lived in.

I turned my left wrist over, my eyes scanning the small shamrock tattoo at the base of my thumb. Savage and Duke had matching ones in the same place.

Duke saw me looking at the tattoo and suddenly he took my hand, his thumb skimming across the ink.

He had been the one to come up with the doodle. We’d been sitting in the back corner of the school library, Savage and I taking turns reading Mary Shelley’sFrankensteinout loud to Duke.

“Pay attention,” I’d snapped in exasperation. “Or you won’t pass this next test.”

“Won’t pass it anyway,” Duke muttered, continuing to sketch something on a piece of paper I couldn’t see.

“Not with that attitude,” I said with a sigh.

“I’m not like you,” Duke said. “It doesn’t matter how hard I study, or where I study or how I study, I won’t pass the test. You’re done with the first page by the time I’ve figured out the first question.”

“Mrs. Sanderson said you can take the test orally,” I said. “So no more excuses. Pay attention.”

“I want to see it,” Savage said.

Duke lifted the piece of paper and showed us the three-leaf clover. Two of the leaves were tattered and had tiny holes, like insects had eaten away at them. But there was one leaf that was intact.

“We’re this three-leaf clover,” Duke explained. “Savage and I are these two leaves here. And you’re this one. The one without any marks or anything.”

“I like it,” Savage stated. “I want a tattoo of it.”

“Yeah, that would be cool,” Duke agreed.

The two of them began discussing the best placement for it. But all I could think about was what Duke had said.
