We stopped outside a black door. There was no sign indicating this was the VIP room, but just behind the door, I could hear the sound of loud, obnoxious laughter. I didn’t need x-ray vision to know that the room was filled with very drunk, very dangerous orcs.

Robbie turned to me. “Another piece of advice? Don’t get close enough for them to touch you. They’re not allowed to touch you, but sometimes these guys don't follow the rules. They don't need to, they're mafia.”

At that moment, a surge of adrenaline had been dumped into my bloodstream and it took me a beat too long to figure out who he meant. “Who?” I asked.

He opened the door for me and placed his hand on my lower back, pushing me inside. “The orcs,” he murmured in my ear.

“Who are you?”

A human stood in front of me, blocking my path. She was absolutely gorgeous with long blonde hair curled into ringlets that hung over her shoulders and a body that had curves in all the right places. She was wearing the same dress as me that clung to her skin like a glove. There was no way anyone was going to notice my body standing next to a golden goddess like her. Oh thank fuck.

“I’m the new girl,” I hesitated, already forgetting the name Robbie gave me. “Raquel?”

She gave me a quick once-over, from my feet stuffed into too tight heels to the blonde wig on my head and sighed to herself. “I guess we can use all the help we can get. Have you been trained on how to handle our VIP clients yet?”

I swallowed hard, the back of my neck feeling suddenly hot. “Pour drinks and smile?” I asked weakly.

I thought she said, “Oh my god they are going to eat you alive,” under her breath, but she turned her back too quickly for me to be sure. She shoved an uncorked bottle of champagne into my arms and jerked her chin to the curtain separating us and the orcs. I could hear the orc’s loud laughter—they were definitely enjoying themselves—followed by soft giggling. The other waitresses, maybe? Then there was a sound I didn’t quite recognize, a low grunting noise. My cheeks flamed. What the hell were they doing back there? I knew this club wasn’t normal, but what they were doing sounded like something reserved only for the bedroom.

“Are you waiting for an invitation? Because I can go get another girl if you’re feeling shy—”

“Uh. No. I’m fine. This is fine.” I forced a smile and walked past her, through the curtains.

The VIP room was smaller than I expected. Or maybe it only appeared smaller than it really was because of the huge orcs inside. There were six seated across from each other at a table in the center of a room. No one turned their heads towards me as I entered their space; all their attention was turned to the dancer grinding on one of the orc’s lap. Their bawdy laughter grew louder as they cheered her on; she leaned her back further into his chest, his massive green hands reaching up to squeeze and knead her breasts.

I wanted to gag as soon as he ripped her bodice down, revealing the delicate pink circles of her nipples.

Pour drinks. Smile. Boxercise, I reminded myself. I willed my legs to move forward, but my feet were frozen in place. I couldn’t move. I stayed on the periphery, watching the action, like some scared pervert.

Suddenly, I registered the low moan again. Deep and guttural like an animal. I jerked my head to the left.Oh my goddess. What part of hell have I walked into?In the corner of the room was another orc I hadn’t clocked earlier, with his legs spread wide as another dancer’s head bobbed up and down on his cock. His moaning grew louder as she worked faster; her pale hands squeezing the top of his thighs.

I clutched the bottle to my chest; my body jerking forward involuntarily. Away from the couple. The corners of the room blurred for a moment, and I thought I was going to pass out. I stumbled forward a few more steps, almost bumping into the corner of the table.

Thank the heavens, no one turned their head. Everyone was too busy watching the other dancer shake her ass. The orc had ripped the rest of her dress, so it hung around her waist like a shredded skirt. I swallowed down the sour taste creeping up my throat and turned my attention to the table and the empty glasses sitting there. All you have to do is pour drinks.

I filled the first glass, moving to the next.

“I can’t believe boss is sending all of us to the next shipment. I didn’t work this hard just to be demoted.”

“You can thank Ansel for that. He’s the reason half our soliders are missing. I hear he spends all day hunting them.”

I stopped short behind the two orcs sitting farthest away from the stripping waitress. This was information Liam and Demie needed, but I didn’t know what to do. The drinks they were sipping from were full. I couldn’t even offer a top off.Well, do something! It’s going to look suspicious with you just standing here.

“You’re new,” the orc sitting closest to me said, turning in his seat to smile at me. They were older with streaks of gray peppered into their black hair, and both wore suits that made them look like they had walked straight out of the boardroom after negotiating a million-dollar deal.

“Yeah, I just started.”

“Welcome to Nightshade,” the orc said, extending his hand. “My name is Felix. Hopefully, you can handle this level of debauchery.”

I placed my hand in his; his green hand completely wrapping around mine. “Oh of course. This is . . . nothing compared to my last job.”

Felix held my stare for a long moment, his eyes narrowed. My heart hammered against my ribs, but eventually he let my hand go. My shoulders sagged with relief.

“Hey, I know you!” his friend shouted, even though he was seated only a few inches away from Felix.

I took a step backwards. “You do?” I said in a tight voice. “That’s weird, I’m actually new to the city. I get that a lot though. People are always stopping me in the street. I guess I have one of those faces.”

The drunk orc’s grin widened. I didn’t back up far enough because he reached out and grabbed my waist, pulling me into his lap with one hard pull. I squealed, my heart hammering in my throat.
