I studied the gun back then and used the information to cheat and make sure the bullet wouldn’t line up to fire when I put it to my own head.

One more boy went after me.

And then I knew Vladimir’s fate. Vlad died quickly. But he was so young. I feel shame remembering his face and how it was destroyed.

The Smith and Wesson resting in my hand now has a cylinder that spins counterclockwise when looking at it from the rear. I peek and can just make out the bullet’s position as I take the gun in my right hand. It will take four trigger pulls before this gun will fire. I put the gun, point blank, to the poor girl's forehead. She starts to cry as I pull the trigger.

I’m happy that this time I was able to use the trick to keep someone else from dying.

The girl is shaking and hyperventilating. It would take three more trigger pulls before this gun would fire now. I think for a second, I might be able to get Sonomi before they kill me, but then this girl and Brenda would be killed right away. Then what would happen to Mari?

“Good!” Sonomi says. She grabs the gun from my hand, looks down at the girl, then continues. “Stop crying bitch! You won and now look what a beautiful owner you have. He’s going to work for me now.”

“I am?” I ask, confused. “So, this is a real job offer?”

“Of course, darling. You’ll be in charge of the new games. This idea is almost all I need to take over everything. Imagine how much we’ll make on supplying the girls and the commissions on the betting.”

“I see,” I say, doing my best to maintain my composure. My shed door swings open, and Katana and his men rush in. A wave of relief sweeps over me. A little late, but at least now we have the upper hand.

“Kat! So nice to see you again. Where do you have the Yumikos?” Sonomi asks.

Why the hell is she askingKatanawhere they are?

“Your scout watching the house said Arty the Agent and his men got there before we did,” Katana answers her. “He’s got Yuuto, Maresuke, and Hanako. I left men at the house to wait for Marika.”

What the fuck?!

MARIKA

“End call and come right now if you want see your family,” a pale man with short, blonde hair says. I’ve never seen him before. The man has a Russian accent and is whispering like someone else may be nearby or like he doesn’t want Josef to hear through my cell phone. I slip the poker chip into my pocket.

My mind races as I consider my options. I stand in the doorway of the kitchen that leads to the hallway, with this unfamiliar man at the opposite end. I could easily run and escape out the front door, but he seems to know where my family is. I feel bad doing this to Josef, but I decide the best course of action is to end the call.

“Must go now! I will bring you to them. Leave phone here!” he directs and starts walking toward me.

“Why should I believe you? Who even are you?” I ask. My heart beats fast in my chest as he gets closer.

“Because little choice for you. I am Bratki soldier,” he simply says.

I eye him carefully. He’s right. I don’t have much of a choice. I want to find my family, and this guy is my best bet so far.

“Leave phone. Could be used to track you. Leave it here!” he repeats.

“Okay,” I say and put my phone on the shelf by the door. I move to let him walk in front of me, not wanting to turn my back on him.

“Good,” he says, and steps over something I hadn’t noticed was on the ground right in front of me.

“Oh my God! Is he dead?” There is an Asian man lying on the floor motionless, with a gun lying an inch or so from his hand.

“Yes. There was another one, is in your bedroom. Sorry, your fancy microphone was destroyed. That one is same condition as this one, though. Let's go now.” he says like this is all normal for him. It probably is.
