“No.”

“Any qualms taking a fucker down and using a knife to gut him?”

“What on earth, no!” I sputtered.

“So, you’re not gonna go to war with a crime boss and rain blood down on the city?” Manny kept asking questions.

“Seriously? No!”

“Fuck me, a normal chick,” Manny mused.

Yes, I was. What was Manny talking about?

“Care to explain?” I asked curiously. Manny must have a reason for this weird style of questioning.

“Phoe got her ass kidnapped by a fuckin’ whack job of an ex who beat the crap outta her, and the club went after him. Ace ended up shot to shit, saving Phoe. Artemis is a badass. Not even the terminator would stand against her. She declared war against Rage, took out a load of people who fucked her up and wiped out a crime boss and his bullshit.”

“Um, I’m uncertain where to start with that information. Who is Artemis?” I said, my mind buzzing.

“Ace’s old lady. Woman is a one army ninja,” Manny carried on, staring at me.

“Okay.” I felt an intense curiosity about these stories.

“Drake and Phoe got hitched recently because of Ace saving her ass. Ace and Artemis married a few weeks ago. There was a brawl between Ace and Artemis on their wedding day. Bitch took him down and made him cry.” Manny grinned. I was wondering if I’d met Ace.

“Okay,” I repeated.

“So, you’re normal? The MC not gotta brace for shit? I don’t need to be warning my brothers to gear up.”

“No, I mean, yes, I’m boring,” I stuttered.

Manny sighed and sent me a look of relief.

“Thank fuck for minor miracles,” Manny replied and took a deep swallow of coffee. I looked at him and pursed my lips. The burning question had to be asked.

“Why does it matter if I’m ordinary?”

Manny shot me an ‘are you kidding me?’ glance.

“Jett,” Manny said shortly, and his face lit up in amusement.

“What about Jett?” I pushed for more information.

“Babe, you joking?” Manny growled.

“I don’t understand,” I told him honestly. Manny’s eyes twinkled.

“You will,” he promised me. Manny rose to his feet, and I stared up at him. Confidently, he gave me a wink and strolled away; I’d no idea what had just happened; it was damned odd. I looked up as Reid approached me, looking excited.

“Remember the Marchmont Estate?” Reid asked as he sat down where Manny had been sitting.

“Huh?” I replied eloquently.

“The old Marchmont Estate, in Derbyshire,” Reid said, bouncing in his chair.

“Yes? The wonderful library?” The estate held an extensive and comprehensive library, which I’d once visited, and nearly reduced me to tears. I had so wanted it; Reid had dragged me out of there before I moved into the building.

“Yeah, old Lord Montague died, and the son has taken over. It’s a mess,” Reid said gleefully.
