“Nah, I’ll let Sin cool down first,” Jett replied, and multiple shakes of heads met him. “What?”

“You let Sin be for a day or so, she’ll stew on it. Women do. And Sin will make it bigger than it was,” Drake added ruefully. He looked at Phoe, who grinned. Drake was pussy whipped and didn’t care who knew it.

“Sin will calm down,” Jett insisted.

“Making fuck up number two,” Ace told Jett, and Manny laughed.

“What’s a numpty?” Texas asked, whipping out a phone. He showed the screen to Hunter, who managed a smile, rolling his eyes. Texas passed it to Drake, who snorted.

“Girl was fuckin’ fantastic. Didn’t think Sin had that under her hood. Better give chase, brother,” Manny added.

“I’ll let her calm down,” Jett insisted.

“Told Sin this will be fun,” Manny announced to Lowrider, who grinned. They looked up as Ezra’s phone beeped, and the man rose to his feet in a fluid motion and began moving towards the door.

“Ezra?” Drake called out.

“Got something to do. Be back later,” Ezra tossed over his shoulder. Lowrider turned with a frown to Drake.

“Ezra got pussy on the go?” Lowrider demanded, and Drake shrugged.

“Not mentioned anything.”

“Ezra never says shit to anyone,” a petite redhead said, popping up under Ace’s arm. Ace looked down at his old lady.

“What do you know, killer?” Ace asked, and his wife grinned.

“Not much. Want me to find out?” Ace groaned, and Jett caught his eyes.

“Club ain’t prepared for two brothers to go down together,” Texas whined to Drake, whose face settled into anger and concern. Drake’s gaze followed Ezra’s exit.

Drake’s relationship with Phoe hadn’t been smooth sailing, and there was no way anyone could mistake Ace’s and Artemis’s courtship as anything but a full-out war. Marsha and Fish were the only couple who’d had a peaceful time dating. Nothing came between them, and they’d been easy, apart from one blip. They desperately wanted kids, and it hadn’t happened.

“The club will manage anything that comes our way. Don’t let Sin stew if you’re claiming her. That will make it rocky.” Drake slapped Jett on the shoulder, tucked Phoe under his arm, and picked up his beer.

“Woman has to learn that I wear the pants,” Jett replied and missed seeing Artemis roll her eyes. The brothers thought they wore the pants and the women let them!

Sin

When I arrived home, I saw Reid’s truck missing from the drive, and the house loomed dark and empty. A frown crossed my face as Reid wasn’t supposed to leave until the morning, and I climbed out of the car. A tremor of fear run through me. Reid was right. Damn it, I hated walking into a dark house. It always scared me. As I opened the front door, I reached out and hit the switch, and light flooded the hallway.

I reset the alarm and locked the door behind me. Ramses came scurrying towards me, yowling, and I bent down and picked the annoyed cat up. Sadly, I carried Ramses into the kitchen and flipped on the lights. At least Ramses loved me! Once there, I put Ramses down and pulled out his food. Ramses yowled as he threaded himself around my ankles, then stuck his kitty head in the bowl.

A note sat on the counter, and I read Reid was staying at a hotel near the airport as he’d an early flight out. I frowned, but there was nothing I could do. Lonely, I walked into my living room and switched on a lamp. Once the room dimly lit up, I turned off the other lights bar the upstairs landing light. I curled up in my armchair and gazed at the wall.

Tonight, I had such a lovely time until Jett blew it. Jett had been so nice until his harsh comments. Hell, I was still reeling that Jett had called me a judgemental c word. I’d never been called that word before, and it had shocked me to my toes. Jett’s face had taken on an ugly expression as he took my words out of context, and I hadn’t liked it.

I didn’t date, not even in college. I had the odd dinner meeting but never a relationship, so I had no idea how to handle one in real life. In my opinion, which was what mattered, Jett had well and truly overreacted. Jett hadn’t listened, nor had he attempted to listen.

I’d liked Jett from what I’d experienced with him, and now my emotions were all over the place. Sexually, Jett attracted me, but there was no way I’d allow sexual attraction to let me be treated so poorly. Reid would be furious if he knew what happened tonight. He’d shown me I deserved to be treated with appreciation. And if Jett didn’t (and after this, he clearly couldn’t) give me respect, then I had to leave him by the roadside.

Reid had picked me up after several disastrous dates in Oxford. Men thought because I was shy, I’d be easy. Dates hadn’t ended the way they wanted, and it hurt when harsh words had been exchanged. Reid waited on the side lines to pick me back up and rebuild confidence in myself. Self-esteem had always been a problem, but I’d gained strength with each experience.

Somehow, my essays and grades in university built up my ego. I’d found the courses easy. Academia was pure. The lack of belief in myself stemmed from being the youngest student in Oxford, and that was where Reid intervened. Obviously, I hadn’t been able to go to parties with everyone else in my courses because I was too young. Reid made sure I did things like bowling, played pool, and went for picnics and movies.

Reid had his own friends, but he always checked in with me for breakfast or lunch each day. He’d found a natural balance of spending half a week with friends and the rest with me. That was a quality I’d loved Reid for. We’d kissed in Oxford to test if there was a hidden spark and never again. Both of us had such an intense feeling of wrongness that we’d agreed never to repeat it!

Thinking about what Reid had done for and shown me, I decided there and then that Jett and I were finished. Yeah, I had wanted to explore the sexual attraction between Jett and myself, and I’d sensed something in the fledgling relationship that had been promising. Instead, Jett showed himself to be a total asshole tonight, and I wasn’t up for having a twatwaffle in my future. Dad and Reid set excellent examples of what to aim for in a lover, and Jett lacked those qualities.
