Drake and Hawthorne had been on the phone ever since arriving at the hospital. Their countenances became blacker and blacker. Neither man seemed to receive the answers they desired. Ben kept throwing worried looks over his shoulder at them.
Artemis had gone hunting when we came up to sit with Reid; I didn’t understand what it meant. But I’d overheard a woman called Dana, who worked as Hawthorne’s secretary, tell him they’d leads on those who had bid on Amelia. On hearing that Artemis had ‘gone hunting’, Ramirez turned a blind eye to it, and Ben sounded frustrated.
Seemed everyone understood what ‘gone hunting’ meant apart from me, but I could guess. Oh yes, I used my imagination and hoped Artemis got a good haul. In fact, reading the newspapers several months in the future, Artemis landed more than a damn good catch.
Artemis and the Juno Group brought down an entire paedophile ring. Powerful perverted men and provided irreversible evidence of their guilt. She’d been lauded as a hero by the media, and Rage had been under siege for a few weeks by the press, but soon enough, they moved on. Artemis was my superhero!
Reid insisted we go to his house that night, and wearily I climbed into Jett’s pickup, tired out. Amelia was asleep in her car seat. Jett was uncomfortable on the drive, and I guessed something was eating him. Something other than Gunner’s attack had rocked Jett to his core. I let Jett boss me around when we got home, and we got Amelia to bed.
Jett seemed to be avoiding me. I kept seeing flashes of guilt and shame when Jett looked at me, and I bearded him when Jett came out of the shower. I waited for him to get into bed, and before Jett could roll over or anything else, I straddled him naked. Jett’s eyes grew wide.
“Talk to me!” I demanded.
“Sin, honey, this isn’t a good idea.”
“Why not?” I asked, tilting my head to one side.
“You almost got raped today!” the words burst from Jett’s lips angrily, and I saw that guilt again.
“But I didn’t. You saved me,” I told him simply. His eyes burned into mine. I could understand how furious Jett was with himself. This wouldn’t do at all.
“Was tied and wounded, couldn’t stop him stripping you bare baby. Was fuckin’ useless,” Jett ground out through clenched teeth.
“I didn’t get raped because you got free and saved me. Now you might have nightmares, but I can damn well tell you I won’t be. I knew you’d get free, knew you’d protect me. I didn’t doubt you.”
“You told me to look away.”
“Of course I did. Do you think I wanted the image in your head of another man stripping me naked? I wasn’t telling you to look elsewhere because I was ashamed. I didn’t want you to punish yourself.”
A shadow crossed his face. “Failed you.”
“Fuck that.” I slapped Jett’s chest, and his gaze widened, surprise in them now. “I didn’t get raped because you saved me. Our daughter wasn’t sold and hurt because you got free. We had people looking for us because you joined Rage, one of the best fucking MCs in the world.”
Jett’s mouth dropped open, and then he closed it.
“You saw me kill Dina.”
I narrowed my eyes at that.
“Only thing that will keep me awake is that it was over quickly. You should have made that whacked-out bitch suffer! What woman puts her daughter up for sale for paedophiles to buy and rape? What mother is that?” My voice began rising, and Jett glanced at Amelia’s cot and then surged upwards and covered my mouth with his. When Jett kissed me into silence, he looked into my eyes.
“It’s not there,” Jett muttered.
“What’s not?” I asked, puzzled.
“Fear of me for killing a woman like that. Where’s your fear?” Jett demanded as if he couldn’t work it out.
“Why on earth would I fear you? You saved me, you saved Amelia, you love us. I have nothing to dread from you, silly.”
Jett’s eyes searched mine, and finally, he laid back on the bed, gaze still locked on my face.
“You mean it. You ain’t afraid of me.”
I twisted my hips and slammed down beside him.
“Stupid man. Now shut up and make love to me.”
Jett chuckled.
