Gauntlet and I exchanged glances, and I knew he was thinking the same. They both needed protection from the greedier aspects of society. Calamity wasn’t as innocent as Rosie, but his nature was of that to help, making him an easy target. No way would someone shake Rosie and Calamity down. We wouldn’t allow it!

Fanatic pulled me to one side to question me about returning to college, and once he was reassured it was what I wanted, he relaxed. Phoe had raised a great kid in Fanatic, and I was fucking proud to call him a brother. The boy had turned into a fantastic man, and I couldn’t wait to watch him grow.

???

Aurora had been right, damn it, I growled as I looked at the letter in my hands. It was Friday, and she’d been smack on target. The paper crunched in my palms, and while I longed to shred it into pieces, I knew Aurora would want to read it. She bounced down the stairs and stopped at my expression.

“What’s happened?” she asked, her hand going to her heart.

“The past reared its ugly head, just as you claimed, baby,” I replied, giving her the paper. Aurora read it, her face turning redder and redder.

“Is he fucking joking?” she roared, her temper catching fire.

“Appears to be,” I responded in a snide tone.

Aurora’s mouth worked as she tried to find her words.

The letter was from my father. It appeared he’d somehow got hold of the local newspaper and read the story of his hero son. He disapproved of how his family had been disrespected again in public. Dear old Dad offered me a chance to return to the family fold. With my antics, I’d proved a credit to his household and had settled into being a decent man. His words, not mine.

Dad presented me with the option to go home and finish my education and promised me the internship that had been stolen from me many years ago. He seemed to be under the impression that I’d done all this to impress him. His approach was that of a benevolent, kindly guy who recognised my efforts. Fuck him! Underneath his friendly tone was what really mattered. That I return home, and he could do a newspaper release to claim the prodigal son had returned and there were no bad feelings. It was a ploy to negate the tabloid article. A bang on the door echoed, and I jumped, and a sinking sense hit me as Aurora opened the door before I could stop her.

Standing on the step was a person I’d never planned or wished to ever see again.

“Jacon,” my eldest brother greeted me.

What the fuck!

Chapter Six.

Klutz

“Whatever the fuck you want, the answer’s no!” I exploded before Daryl could say a word. Daryl, the smug asshole he was, lifted an eyebrow and studied me. Then he turned to Aurora.

“Hello, I am Daryl, Jacon’s eldest brother. May I come in?” he charmed Aurora.

She stepped back and plastered herself to my side.

“This is Klutz’s home. It’s up to him,” Aurora said and wrapped an arm around my waist. She was making it very clear that she stood by me.

“I’m sure you don’t want to let the neighbours overhear, so shall we go inside,” Daryl suggested.

My initial urge was to slam the damn door shut in his face, but I decided to be the bigger man. I moved aside and motioned him in.

“Would you like a drink?” Aurora asked, manners coming to the fore.

“He won’t be here long enough, baby girl,” I responded as Daryl stared around the snug home.

“Your habits have worsened over the years,” Daryl commented.

“Being locked away when innocent and nearly beaten to death can affect a man’s manners,” I countered.

A dark flush shot up Daryl’s cheeks, and I knew my point had hit him.

“Jacon, let the past sleep,” Daryl chided, and he ignited my temper.

Grasping hold tightly before I unleashed my fury, I swallowed and stared at him.

“What. Do. You. Want?” I bit each word out.
